MAN PULLED ALIVE FROM A COLLAPSED PIT LATRINE IN SENAMA COMPUND.
10 January 2026 – Mansa
A 42 year old man of Senama township is alive and in stable condition following a dramatic and timely rescue by the Mansa Municipal Council Fire Brigade earlier today.
The man, identified as Mr. Paul K***a, a resident of Chitakwa Village under Chief Chimese, fell into a pit latrine measuring approximately 1.5 metres by 1 metre and about 4 metres deep at around 13:53 hours. The pit structure collapsed, burying him under more than half a tonne of burnt bricks and loose soil mixed with toilet contents, placing his life in immediate danger.
The emergency was reported by Ms. Ruth Mwape, an eyewitness and resident of Chitakwa Village, who promptly contacted the Fire Brigade emergency and
upon receiving the distress call, the Mansa Municipal Council Fire Brigade swiftly responded to the scene.
The rescue operation was conducted by Leading Firefighter J. Manza, Firefighter Driver D. Chilefwaya, Firefighter B. Makandwe and Firefighter W. Miyambo, who worked tirelessly by ensuring that the life was not lost.
Using basic but effective rescue equipment, ropes, spades, buckets, picks and a fireman’s axe, the team tactfully and carefully removed debris and secured the casualty.
The casualty sustained minor injuries and was found to be in a stable condition and was immediately transported to Senama Level 1 Hospital, where he is currently receiving medical care.
The successful rescue stands as a strong testament to the professionalism, bravery and rapid response capacity of the Mansa Municipal Council Fire Brigade, whose decisive action turned a potentially fatal incident into a powerful story of survival.
Mansa Municipal Council has once again urged residents to exercise caution around pit latrines, particularly during the rainy season when soil instability significantly increases the risk of collapse.
