Pretoria High Court to Hear Lungu Case on Monday

The Pretoria High Court of South Africa will on Monday, September 8th, 2025 hear former President Edgar Lungu's family's application for leave to appeal its judgment, which ordered that the body of Mr. Lungu be repatriated to Zambia for a State Funeral.

The matter will be heard in open court at 09:30 hours before Deputy Judge President Aubrey Ledwaba and two other Judges.

This case arises from an application by former First Lady Esther Lungu and seven others, who are seeking a private burial for Mr. Lungu, against the Zambian Government plans that the sixth President be buried in Zambia with full state funeral protocols and
military honours.

The hearing date has been set following the Pretoria High Court's indefinite adjournment on August 18th 2025.

The adjournment was granted after a joint request from the legal teams representing the Zambian Government and the Lungu family.

LUAPULA PROVINCE MINISTER IMPRESSED WITH ROAD WORKS IN MANSA

Luapula Province Minister, Engineer Nason Musonda, has expressed satisfaction with the ongoing road works being undertaken by Mansa Municipal Council on the Kalaba and Matanda roads.

Speaking after inspecting progress on the two roads today, Eng. Musonda commended the local authority, noting that the gravelling and compacting works will greatly enhance the durability of the roads.

He further highlighted that out of the 139 kilometers of roads earmarked for rehabilitation in the district, most of the feeder roads will be covered. The Minister urged the Council to intensify its efforts and ensure that all works are completed before the onset of the rainy season.

Meanwhile, Mansa Mayor, His Worship Njikho Musuku, said the completion of the Matanda road will significantly improve mobility and reduce the cost of doing business, as it serves as a key economic route in the area. The Mayor also thanked President Hakainde Hichilema for releasing resources under the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) to support the road works and appealed to residents to exercise patience and cooperation during the rehabilitation process.

On the technical progress, Mansa Municipal Council Director of Engineering Services, Engineer Andrew M’tewa, disclosed that 68 out of the 139 kilometers on various roads in the district has so far been graded and that 36 kilometers of the Kalaba road has also been graded, with mitre drainages formed and spot gravelling currently underway. Regarding the Matanda road, Eng. M’tewa reported that approximately 14 kilometers have so far been bush-cleared in readiness for road formation and grading of the 56-kilometer stretch.

Minister Musonda conducted the inspection in the company of Mansa Municipal Council Town Clerk, Dr. Josephine Mwanza, Civil Engineer Steven Sichinga and Councillor Dominic Bunda.

Earlier, the delegation paid a courtesy call on His Royal Highness Chief Kalaba, who expressed delight with the progress made on the Kalaba road.
