MINING INVESTORS URGED TO PRIORITIZE LOCAL SUPPLIERS, CONTRACTORS
... and ensure equitable business opportunities
Lusaka... Sunday May 11, 2025 (SMART EAGLES)
The Advocates for National Development and Democracy (ANDD) has urged mining investors in the country to prioritize Zambian suppliers and contractors, ensuring equitable business opportunities.
ANDD Executive Director Samuel Banda says such inclusivity strengthens local enterprises and enhances their contribution to Zambiaโs GDP.
Mr Banda noted that in order to further sustain this growth, it is imperative to empower small-scale miners with access to equipment and capital, thereby addressing critical barriers faced by local operators.
The ANDD Executive Director has told journalists in Lusaka at a press briefing that his organization is encouraged by the steady progress in the mining sector, especially the recent developments at Konkola Copper Mines (KCM).
"We commend Vedantaโs commitment of US$250 million towards settling KCMโs legacy debt and outstanding payments to suppliers, an important step toward restoring stability and investor confidence. The resumption of operations at KCM has significantly contributed to Zambiaโs 12% increase in copper production in 2024, reaching 820,670 metric tonnes," he stated.
"Plans are underway to further increase KCMโs output to 300,000 metric tonnes annually within the next five years, up from the current 200,000 metric tonnes. Similarly, Mopani Copper Mines, now under the management of International Resources Holding (IRH), is targeting a production increase to 200,000 metric tonnes within three years."
He further noted that the increased copper production has already begun to positively impact the economy.
"The Kwacha has started appreciating against the US dollar, currently trading at 26.7. This development is expected to lower the cost of doing business and reduce prices of basic commodities," he added.
