CONFUSION ERUPT WITHIN TONSE ALLIANCE CAMP OVER CAMPAIGN FUNDS AND PRESIDENCY
Behind the smiles, embraces and public displays of unity between Brian Mundubile and his running mate, Makebi Zulu, reports suggest that tensions are growing within the Tonse Alliance over the sharing of campaign responsibilities and funding arrangements.
Sources close to the alliance say that members of the Mundubile camp are unhappy with what they perceive to be delays in the release of campaign resources said to be from the late President Edgar Lungu's family, particularly his daughter, Tasila Lungu.
At the same time, some alliance members reportedly accuse Mr Zulu of using the Tonse Alliance platform to position himself for a future presidential bid in 2031, rather than focusing exclusively on the alliance's immediate electoral objectives.
Other voices within the opposition coalition have gone further, alleging that Mr Zulu is a covert project of UPND and is strategically positioning himself to take control of the Tonse Alliance should Mr Mundubile's ongoing legal challenges result in a conviction or disqualification.
While the alliance leadership continues to project an image of cohesion, the reported disagreements highlight the difficulties of managing competing ambitions, expectations and interests within a broad political coalition.
As the campaign gathers momentum, the Tonse Alliance may find that maintaining internal unity becomes as important as challenging its political opponents. Whether these tensions are isolated grievances or signs of deeper divisions remains to be seen.
