Maureen Mwanawasa dies

FORMER first lady Maureen Mwanawasa has died aged 60.

Maureen's nephew and former foreign affairs minister Stanley Kakubo has confirmed in a statement.

"It's with deepest and profound sadness and sorrow that the Mwanawasa and Kakubo family announce the untimely passing of our beloved mother, sister, aunt, and Former First Lady of the Republic of Zambia, Mrs Maureen Kakubo Mwanawasa," he announced.

Kakubo who is also family spokeperson said Maureen passed away this evening at Maina Soko Medical Centre after a short illness.

"The funeral gathering is at her residence in Roma Park. More details will be communicated in due course," stated Kakubo.

A lawyer by profession, Maureen became first lady in 2001 after her husband, Levy Patrick Mwanawasa won the presidential election to succeed late former president Fredrick Chiluba.

She was seen as a powerful and supportive figure in her husband’s reign until his death in 2008.

Maureen tried her chance at becoming Lusaka mayor on the UPND ticket in the 2016 general election but lost to PF's Wilson Kalumba.

Since then, Maureen led a quiet political life and was often in the news for her law practice.

On her 60th birthday last April, Maureen got baptised at Twin Palm Baptist Church in Lusaka, exactly 22 years after being disfellowshipped as a Jehovah's witness for supporting her husband’s political career.

Jovial Chasefu nurse shocks family, friends with su***de

A GIRL who appeared happy and problem free has left everyone wondering what could have been eating her up after she committed su***de by jabbing herself to death.

26-year-old Sibong'ile Mwale was posted to Chasefu district in Eastern Province as a midwife for Phikamalaza Health Post under the Ministry of health in 2022.

She is originally from Ndola, on the Copperbelt, were she grew up from and completed her high school at Lubuto Secondary School in 2015.

Sibong’ile was also the first child her mother managed to educate.

However, on Monday, the ‘happy’ nurse who was staying alone decided to end her life in her house, by injecting herself with tablets meant for maize preservation around 03:00 hours.

Eastern Province Police Commissioner, Robertson Mweemba, who confirmed the incident said she was rushed to Lundazi District Hospital where she was pronounced dead.

“The body of the deceased has since been deposited in the Lundazi District Hospital Mortuary awaiting burial,” said Mweemba.

Her friends expressed their grief through social media posts, adding that she gave no signs of wanting to end her life.

“It hit us in such a way that we didn’t expect her to do something like that because she was a very jovial person."

" We could talk to her and laugh with her and we thought everything was okay only for us to wake up one morning to such news, which is very very sad, considering the fact that she was her only family here and the only family she has is in Ndola,” a friend, Hildah Miti told Kalemba.
