100,000 FSP Farmers Get Climate Insurance Payouts

October,29.2025

Chipo Nachibbatu

The Government, through the Zambia State Insurance Corporation—ZSIC—has paid insurance claims to 100,000 Food Security Pack farmers whose crops were destroyed by climate shocks during the 2022/2023 and 2023/2024 farming seasons.

Speaking during the payout ceremony in Mumbwa District, Ministry of Community Development and Social Services Permanent Secretary Beatrice Chilomo said the initiative is helping to cushion smallholder farmers against the growing threat of droughts, floods, and erratic rainfall.

She noted that the affected households were insured at a total value of over 122 million kwacha, describing the partnership between the Ministry and ZSIC as a milestone in building resilience and safeguarding food security among vulnerable communities.

Ms. Chilomo added that 140,000 farmers have already been insured for the 2025/2026 farming season, while plans are underway to support 325,000 households under various components of the Food Security Pack by 2026/2027.

ZSIC Managing Director Trevor Jengajenga said the payouts reflect a strong commitment to empowering farmers and ensuring national food security despite climate challenges.

Meanwhile, Mumbwa District Commissioner Namukolo Hayumbu welcomed the development, urging government to expand FSP coverage in the district, which has a growing population of over 500,000 people.

Avram Grant, FAZ Part Ways — New Era Beckons for Chipolopolo

October,29.2025

Chipo Nachibbatu

The Football Association of Zambia — FAZ — has confirmed the mutual separation with Chipolopolo head coach Avram Grant.

FAZ General Secretary Machacha Shepande says the decision was reached amicably, allowing both parties to chart a new direction for the national team.

Shepande thanked Grant for his contribution to Zambian football and wished him well in his future endeavors.

Grant, who was appointed in December 2022 on a two-year contract, led Zambia to two consecutive Africa Cup of Nations qualifications — including next year’s AFCON in Morocco.

Zambia is drawn in Group A alongside Morocco, Mali, and Comoros.

Further details on the way forward for the Chipolopolo technical bench will be announced soon.

ZCSA Warns Public Against Deadly Illegal Alcohol

October,29.2025

Chipo Nachibbatu

The Zambia Compulsory Standards Agency has sounded the alarm following the tragic deaths of three people in Kalomo District who allegedly consumed a suspected illicit beer made from toxic substances.

The suspected brew is believed to contain dangerous chemicals such as methylated spirit, fertilizer, and tyre mending solution — substances that are not meant for human consumption.

ZCSA Acting Manager for Communications and Public Relations, Onishias Maamba, says the Agency has taken keen interest in the matter and is working with other state institutions to investigate the incident.

Maamba said that the public must avoid consuming beverages whose safety has not been verified by the Zambia Compulsory Standards Agency and Illicit drinks can cause severe poisoning, organ failure, or even death

He added that the Agency will intensify inspections and public education campaigns to curb the illegal production and sale of unregulated beverages.

Mr. Maamba further appealed to the public to report any individuals or companies involved in the illegal manufacture or distribution of alcoholic drinks.

The ZCSA, under the Ministry of Commerce, Trade and Industry, regulates products such as opaque beer, clear beer, potable spirits and table wines to ensure consumer safety and compliance with the Compulsory Standards Act.

ZCSA has since urged members of the public to buy beverages only from trusted and approved sources.

NGOCC BOYCOTTS CONSTITUTION REVIEW — QUESTIONS LEGITIMACY OF PROCESS

October,29.2025

Chipo Nachibbatu

The Non-Governmental Gender Organisations’ Coordinating Council — NGOCC — has announced that it will not participate in the ongoing public consultations on constitutional amendments, citing concerns over legitimacy and inclusiveness.

In a statement issued today, NGOCC Board Chairperson Ms. Beauty Katebe said the organisation has resolved to boycott the Technical Committee on Constitutional Amendments, describing the current review process as “politically motivated and election-centric.”

Ms. Katebe explained that the consultations, running from October 27th to November 13th, stem from the controversial Bill Number 7 of 2025, which was widely rejected.

She said the process appears pre-determined and lacks genuine public participation.

Ms Katebe stated that they believe this process is not about building a lasting constitutional order.

She noted that it is narrowly focused on the 2026 elections and excludes critical voices such as youth and persons with disabilities.

NGOCC has since called on all patriotic Zambians to reject what it terms a flawed process and urged government to initiate a transparent and inclusive review that reflects the aspirations of all citizens.

NGOCC says it remains committed to advocating for reforms that promote justice, equity, and inclusion for all Zambians.

Tragedy Strikes as Young Woman Dies in Chikankata Mine Collapse

October,28.2025

Chipo Nachibbatu

A tragic mine accident has claimed the life of a young woman in Chikankata District.

The incident happened yesterday evening along the Lusitu River, in Chief Mwenda’s area.

According to police, 29-year-old Lorraine Ngezi of Habbonga Village in Siavonga District died after a riverbank collapsed on her while she was engaged in illegal gold mining.

Police say the accident occurred around 17:15 hours on October 27th, when the riverbank suddenly gave way, burying her beneath the soil.

Her colleague, who narrowly escaped, called for help from other miners who later managed to retrieve her body.

Ms. Ngezi is believed to have been working at the site for three days before tragedy struck.

She sustained multiple injuries, including suspected broken ribs.

Her body has since been taken to Chikankata Mission Hospital Mortuary, awaiting postmortem and burial.

Southern Province Commanding Officer, Mr. Auxensio Daka, has expressed sadness over the loss, describing it as a painful reminder of the dangers of illegal mining.

Mr Daka urge members of the public to avoid illegal and unsafe mining activities, as such practices often lead to loss of life and serious injury.

The incident leaves behind a grieving family and community, mourning a young life lost in search of livelihood.

Government Moves to Build Industry-Ready Workforce

October,28.2025

Chipo Nachibbatu

The Government says it is stepping up efforts to build an industry-ready workforce as part of its drive to accelerate Zambia’s economic transformation.

Labour and Social Security Minister Brenda Mwika Tambatamba says a 12-month pilot apprenticeship programme will be launched in January 2026 under the Eighth National Development Plan (8NDP).

The initiative will target key growth sectors—agriculture, mining, tourism, and energy—to bridge the country’s critical skills gap.

Speaking during the Tripartite Consultative Labour Council meeting in Lusaka, Ms. Tambatamba said the programme will boost productivity, promote employability, and provide lessons for scaling up national apprenticeship systems.

The Minister also announced plans to classify air traffic controllers, aviation security personnel, and Electoral Commission of Zambia staff as essential workers, to safeguard peace and the smooth running of the economy.

Meanwhile, the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the European Union (EU) are supporting Government’s Skills Advisory Committee in identifying critical skills needed to drive growth.

ILO Country Director Wellington Chibebe has called on stakeholders to invest in modern training and innovation to prepare Zambia’s workforce for a changing world of work.

And Zambia Federation of Employers President Myra Ngoma has stressed the need for industry-driven skills to align training systems with real economic needs.

On behalf of workers, ZCTU President Blake Mulala reaffirmed commitment to productivity and national growth, but called for fair treatment and respect for labour rights, citing reports of abuse in the private sector that need urgent attention.

Government, employers, and workers are uniting to shape a skilled, productive, and fair workforce—paving the way for a modern, competitive Zambia.

Over 340,000 New Voter Registrations Recorded as ECZ’s Phase Two Gains Momentum

October 27.2025

Chipo Nachibbatu

The Electoral Commission of Zambia says the national voter registration exercise is making steady progress, with more than 343,000 citizens captured during the second phase of the ongoing registration drive.

ECZ Chief Electoral Officer Brown Kasaro confirmed the figures in Lusaka, revealing that the cumulative total from Phase One and Two now stands at 259,488 new voters registered across the country.

Of these, 141,825 are female and 117,663 are male, signaling encouraging participation despite a few logistical setbacks in some areas.

At a media briefing, ECZ Chairperson Mwangala Zaloumis acknowledged public concerns about the 30-day registration period, noting that while many stakeholders are calling for an extension, it is still too early for the Commission to make a decision.

She noted that any decision will be guided by data and operational realities on the ground.

Mrs. Zaloumis further assured citizens that the ECZ has moved to address issues of limited sensitisation, equipment constraints, and accreditation delays, with corrective measures already in place to enhance efficiency at all registration centers.

The Commission is conducting the exercise in phases across all provinces, targeting new voters ahead of the next general elections.

As the process reaches its midpoint, attention now turns to whether the ECZ will extend the registration period — a decision that could shape the inclusiveness of the final voter roll.

For now, the Commission maintains that the exercise remains on course, urging all eligible citizens to register early and avoid the last-minute rush as Phase Two draws to a close.

*LOCAL FARMER APPEALS FOR ACTION AGAINST CATTLE RUSTLING IN MUGOTO SETTLEMENT*

By Malungo Mweemba Musako.

27-10-2025

Mr. Andrew Musune, popularly known as "Doer," a peasant farmer from Mugoto settlement in Chief Naluama's area of Mazabuka district, has urged local authorities to take decisive action against the rampant cattle rustling scourge in the region.

Musune's plea comes after his ox was stolen a few days ago, and despite efforts to investigate, no progress has been made.

He suspects the stolen cattle are being slaughtered and transported to Lusaka for sale.

Speaking to South Power Radio News during an interview, Musune expressed frustration over the recurring thefts, revealing this is the fourth time his cattle have vanished without a trace.

He said this issue needs to be addressed urgently to safeguard livestock, which is their only means of survival.

To curb the vice, Musune proposed that village headmen, vigilantes, and councilors should endorse their signatures before anyone transports cattle or meat, particularly at night.

He also called for the establishment of designated checkpoints and intensified patrols to deter cattle rustlers.

Musune's appeal highlights the plight of many peasant farmers in the area who rely heavily on their livestock for livelihood.

The situation demands immediate attention from local authorities to restore security and protect the farmers' assets.
