Mazabuka Community Radio Station is a Community-owned radio station situated in Mazabuka, a small town along the line of rail in Southern Province. Mazabuka is nicknamed the “sweetest town in Zambia” as it is the home of Zambia’s sugar. It lies about 124 km and 2 hours’ drive South-west of Lusaka with the 2010 population estimated at 261,268 (Central Statistical Office, 2011). The major economic a

ctivities in Mazabuka include sugar production, commercial farming, cattle ranching, fishing and nickel mining. The Zambia Sugar Company, Munali Nickel, Kaleya Small Holdings, Zambezi Ranching, Nanga Farms and other commercial farms are the major employers in the area. Mazabuka Community Radio Station started its operations in 2000. The station operates a 500 Kilowatt transmitter on 95.5 FM and broadcasts to a radius of one hundred and fifty kilometers. However reception is said to be affected by the hilly terrain in the area and unreliable equipment. The station which broadcasts in English and Tonga a privately run community radio. The Station broadcasts from 06.00 hours to 22.00 hours daily and broadcasts a variety of programmes whose focus is on health, HIV and Aids, good governance, community issues, news and current affairs and entertainment. Others programmes include commercials, educational programmes, agricultural programmes, cultural issues as well as talk shows covering good governance, development, poverty eradication, climate change, community and family affairs. The station caters for all age groups ranging from below fifteen years of age to those aged fifty five and above. Our most popular programmes are news and current affairs, community issues, entertainment, Good Governance, talk shows followed by HIV and AIDS.

HEAVY RAINS DAMAGE PART OF FRIDAY'S CORNER IN MAZABUKA

Heavy rains have caused significant damage to part of Friday's Corner Shop in Mazabuka this morning.

The incident occurred around 11 hours when a big tree fell on the shop, damaging its roof and the vendor stands located next to the building.

MazFM reporter visited the scene, where the Mazabuka Municipal Council fire team was seen assessing the situation and evaluating the extent of the damage.

No injuries have been reported so far, but authorities are working quickly to clear the debris and ensure the safety of the area.

A Mazabuka based business man and social worker Busiku Sulwe sponsored a football Christmas tournament in Mazabuka’s Siyowi ward that saw 15 male and female football teams compete for different prizes.

Speaking after the finals yesterday in Siyowi, Sulwe emphasized the need for bringing youths together through sport disciplines which can detach them from committing illicit activities.

Sulwe who pledged his full support towards sports and other activities for the people of Siyowi says his zeal is not only to promote peace and unity through various activities but to also encourage youth talents to discover their talents and soar high.

And speaking earlier, Senior Headman Siyowi Frank Mwiinga applauded Sulwe for bringing youths together through sports and appealed for more of such activities from well wishers.

Senior Headman Siyowi says such sports activities deter youths from bad vices such as stealing, reckless drinking and smoking among others.

Yesterday’s Busiku Sulwe sponsored Christmas tournament saw Liverpool walking away with k800 and a trophy after beating Siyowi jets 1 nil who got k700.

Siyowi jets B went away with k600 while Siyowi pump stars got k550.

Nakaluwe Queens went away with k275 after wiring Siyowi pump stars 2 nil who got k225 in a female football match.

Nachombe Kabunda GIFTS WOMEN WITH OVER 300KGS OF GROUNDNUT SEEDLINGS

Nacoombe Kabunda has donated groundnut seedlings to over 20 women's clubs in magoye constituency.

Kabunda says the initiative aims to help the women become more self-reliant and financially independent.

She says over 300 kilograms of groundnuts have been distributed, with the Nachombe Women Club in Magoye Constituency.

Representatives from more than 20 clubs attended the event to collect the seedlings on behalf of their fellow members.

Vanet Mweemba, a representative from the Nacoombe Kabunda Twakomana Women Club, expressed her gratitude, stating that the donation will greatly benefit her community and assist women to achieve economic stability.

MAGOYE SMALL SCALE FARMER CONCERNED WITH THE CONTINUED DROUGHT

A small-scale farmer in Magoye’s Ngwezi A farming block Joseph Mfula has voiced concern over the ongoing dry spell and its adverse effects on crop growth.

Mfula says that the lack of moisture has caused most crops, particularly maize, to wither.

He fears that this will lead to poor harvests, which could result in significant losses for farmers.

While many are hopeful that the arrival of Cyclone Chida may bring increased rainfall, Mfula explains that the damage to crops caused by the prolonged dry conditions has already been done.

CHIPO CHIIYA DONATES TO THE DISABLED COMMUNITY IN MAZABUKA DISTRICT

Former Mazabuka deputy mayor and philanthropist, Chipo Chiiya, has donated various items to support the disabled community in the district.

As part of his donation, Chiiya provided two bicycles, two footballs, two chess boards, and promised to buy 500 shares for two disabled children at Zambia Sugar Company.

Chiiya made the donation during the “No Walking, No Worries” Poet Concert, held yesterday at Flamboyant School in Mazabuka.

He explained that his donation of bicycles was aimed at helping two school-going children with mobility challenges.

Chiiya, who is also the founder of the Lushomo Foundation, reiterated his commitment to supporting the welfare of people with disabilities in the district.

In response, Misheck Limwanya expressed his gratitude, noting that the donation would greatly enhance the lives of the recipients. He also called on other well-wishers to join in supporting the disabled community in Mazabuka.

The event was organized by Misheck Limwanya, a person with a disability, and featured heartfelt poetry performances.

TWO CHINESE NATIONALS SHOT DURING A CONFRONTATION

Chelston Police Station is investigating a report of grievous harm, threatening violence, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm involving two Chinese nationals.

Zambia police public relations officer Rae Hamoonga says the Station received a report from a Chinese national, Mr. Chen Can aged 44, of Olympia, Lusaka.

He says Mr. Chen reported that he was assaulted and threatened with a pistol by a fellow Chinese national, whose identity he can provide upon sight.

Hamoonga says the incident occurred following a dispute that began at Sun City and continued to Zambezi Mall.

He says It is alleged that during the confrontation, the suspect struck Mr. Chen multiple times on the head with the pistol and discharged two shots into the ground.

The fragments from the shots caused bruises to Mr. Chen’s legs and a severe headache.

Furthermore, another Chinese national, Mr. Yang Hou Cal aged 41, reported that he sustained a gunshot wound during the incident.

The bullet entered through the lower gluteal region (buttock) and exited through the lower left abdomen.

Mr. Yang is currently receiving medical treatment at Medland Hospital, while Mr. Chen has been advised to undergo a CT scan.

The incident is reported to have occurred on, December 12, 2024, at around 01:00 hours at Zambezi Mall. The altercation escalated as two factions of Chinese nationals aligned themselves with either the complainant or the suspect, leading to the violent events.

Police officers visited and processed the scene, recovering the following items:
• 01 projectile,
• 02 bullets,
• 01 cartridge casing, and
• 04 empty cartridges.

The suspect is currently at large, and investigations have been intensified to locate and apprehend the perpetrator.

We urge members of the public to provide any information that may assist in the investigations by contacting the nearest police station.
We take this opportunity to caution all individuals against taking disputes to violent extremes.

The Zambia Police Service remains committed to ensuring law and order prevails in all communities.

NOT BY MIGHTY CHURCH DONATES BOREHOLE TO NDEKE COMMUNITY

Not By Mighty Church in Mazabuka district has donated a borehole valued at over 33,000 Kwacha to ease water challenges in Ndeke community.

The gesture aims to ease the persistent water shortage that the community has been grappling with.

Mazabuka Mayor Hon Vincent Lilanda has praised the church’s initiative, highlighting its potential to significantly improve the quality of life for local residents.

However, Lilanda has also cautioned the community members against vandalising the borehole, urging them to learn from past incidents where street lights were stolen by unknown individuals in the area.

Senior pastor Ronald Tebulu says the project, led by the men’s group at Not By Mighty Church, aligns with the presidential directive to mitigate the effects of last year’s drought.

And Mazabuka Central Ward Councilor Chrispine Hamangaba has also commended the church for its generosity, encouraging other well-wishers to follow suit and invest in similar water projects in the area.

PF SAYS LUNGU TO BE ON THE BALLOT IN 2026 DESPITE COURT RULING

Patriotic Front (PF) Vice President Given Lubinda has emphasized that the party's leader, Edgar Lungu, will be on the ballot for the 2026 general elections, despite a recent ruling by the Constitutional Court declaring him ineligible.

Speaking at a press briefing, Lubinda, accompanied by the party executive, stated that they would explore alternative means to ensure Lungu's candidacy.

He affirmed that both the PF and the UKA alliance continue to support Lungu as their preferred presidential candidate.

The court ruling this morning confirmed that Lungu is barred from standing in any future elections, as he has already served two terms as president, in accordance with the Zambian constitution.
