THE FIRST SCHOOL IN ZAMBIA TO CHOOSE PREFECTS THROUGH ELECTIONS ❤️
Kanyonyo Girls Secondary School (KGSS) in Mongu has made history by becoming the first school in Zambia to choose prefects through a learner-led electoral process.
On Wednesday, 28th January 2026, the school successfully conducted prefect elections, marking a major milestone in student leadership and democratic participation within the education sector. The exercise drew active involvement from learners, who demonstrated responsibility, discipline, and respect for democratic principles.
The elections were conducted peacefully, fairly, and transparently, with teachers and dedicated polling agents overseeing the process to ensure credibility. Learners turned up in large numbers to cast their votes, while contestants showed courage and commitment by presenting themselves for leadership roles. The atmosphere throughout the day reflected maturity and a strong sense of civic duty among the pupils.
This pioneering initiative is in line with Zambia’s new Competency-Based Curriculum, which emphasizes practical life skills alongside academic learning. Through this process, learners were able to experience democracy firsthand, developing leadership, critical thinking, decision-making, and problem-solving skills.
Positions contested included Headgirl, Vice Headgirl, Academics Prefect, Hygiene Prefect, Sports Prefect, Clubs Prefect, and several others, ensuring broad participation across school activities.
The initiative was spearheaded by the Social Science Department under the guidance of the Civic Education Section, with valuable support from Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) officials from Mongu Municipal Council. Their presence not only ensured a smooth process but also helped sensitize learners on the importance of elections, especially in a national election year.
Kanyonyo Girls Secondary School has truly set a powerful example, proving that democracy can be nurtured early and that today’s learners are indeed tomorrow’s leaders.
