🚆 TAZARA CONCESSION: FACTS YOU SHOULD KNOW
âť“ Has TAZARA been sold?
NO.
TAZARA has NOT been sold.
TAZARA remains 100% owned by the Governments of Tanzania and Zambia. This is a time-bound concession, not privatization.
âť“ Has TAZARA been given to the Chinese?
NO.
China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) is a concessionaire, not an owner. Their role:
• Invest
• Rehabilitate
• Modernise
• Operate under strict contract terms
Ownership stays with Tanzania and Zambia.
âť“ If CCECC can raise tonnage from 400,000 MT to 2.4 million MT, why not run it ourselves?
Because mandate alone is not enough. For years, TAZARA has faced:
• Ageing infrastructure
• Limited capital
• High operating risk
• Constraints common to public railways
Modern railways need large upfront investment, speed, and risk-bearing capacity.
That’s what the concession unlocks.
âś… What does TAZARA gain?
• Rebuilt track & systems
• Higher freight volumes
• More revenue
• Less burden on governments
• Skills transfer
• A stronger railway at concession end
🔑 Bottom line
✔️ TAZARA is not sold
✔️ TAZARA is not handed over
✔️ Ownership remains sovereign
✔️ The railway is being revitalised, not surrendered
