Improving Health Outcomes in Zambia: A Call for Policy-Focused Action

By: Kelvin Chisanga

Improving health outcomes in Zambia demands strategic, policy-driven interventions.

There is an urgent need to develop sustainable strategies that build capacity and create industry-specific modalities within the healthcare system—particularly those focused on primary and preventive care.

In the face of limited budget support and constrained expenditures, it is imperative to critically examine and strengthen health sector funding.

Investment in primary healthcare systems must be prioritized, as these form the backbone of any effective public health framework.

Zambia must aspire to deliver context-specific, evidence-informed health solutions that directly address the nation’s unique challenges.

This requires a comprehensive, integrated approach to primary healthcare management—one that places the needs of vulnerable populations, especially women and children, at the center.

Even amidst resource constraints, Zambia can leverage its competencies to stimulate interest and funding from key stakeholders.

By demonstrating commitment and efficiency, the country can inspire confidence and attract much-needed support for health initiatives.

Furthermore, Zambia must adopt innovative health models designed to catalyze policy actions that address systemic disparities, including high rates of preventable illness and premature mortality.

A focused crusade on strengthening primary healthcare and addressing inequities is not only necessary but overdue.

Zambia’s situation is not isolated. The broader African health sector faces profound challenges. Yet, within these challenges lie opportunities for Zambia to lead by example—by championing inclusive, proactive, and results-driven health policies.

Buyantashi School in Kanyenda Ward Faces Challenges Due to Lack of Accommodation

Buyantashi in Kanyenda Ward, is facing significant challenges due to the lack of accommodation for teachers at the local school. As a result, teachers have abandoned the school and are commuting from Luanshya and Ndola to teach.

Local residents have expressed feelings of abandonment, citing a lack of visits from government officials or politicians since 2021. Emmanuel Mutandi, the Ward Development Committee (WDC) member, has appealed for help from well-wishers and the government to address the accommodation crisis facing teachers and the headteacher.
