Local government and rural development minister Gift Sialubalo has implored local authorities in the country to be proactive in resource mobilization instead of depending on the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) only.

Mr. Sialubalo made the call when he recently handed over various Community projects in Mwense constituency constructed using CDF.

A total of 5,140 vulnerable people in Mwense district in Luapula province will benefit relief maize from the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU) in the district.

District Administrative Officer Philip Muonga said the distribution of the relief maize has already started and so far, six out of 21 wards have been covered.

Mwense District health office targets to vaccinate over 29,000 children under the age of five years against polio during the ongoing first round child health week exercise

District Nutritionist Philip Silwimba said the exercise also includes mass screening to assess children who are malnourished and counselling mothers on best feeding practices among others.

The district Health Office in Mwense District has described the implementation of the Food and Nutrition Security enhanced Resilience (FANSER) project by the German Cooperation as successful.

District nutritionist Phillip Silwimba said since the inception of the project in 2019, the district has recorded improved nutrition status especially for the under five children.

Mr. Silwimba said the project also helped to capacity build the health staff and enhanced the multisectoral approach to addressing the issue of nutrition through the formation of District Nutrition Coordination Committees (DNCC) drawn from different departments.

Mr. Silwimba said the district health office is ready to take up the project once it comes to an end this year and requested the trained volunteers to continue working with the health office.

“We have put up measures to sustain the gains from the project. We have incorporated volunteers who were trained by the project into our health system. Apart from that, a number of health personnel in facilities have also been capacity built,” Mr. Silwimba explained

And Mambilima Mission Hospital administrator Kasawa said the hospital has experienced a reduction is nutrition and hygiene related diseases

Mr. Benjamin Kasawa said before the project, the health facilities used to record high numbers of diarrheal and malnutritional related cases due to lack of knowledge on good nutrition practices.

He said the FANSER project has helped to educate the communities on the importance of good hygiene, nutrition and sanitation practices

Mr. Kasawa further said most households in the communities now have well-constructed pit latrines with hand washing facilities

“This time, very few children are under weighing. Most of them weigh normally or above normal because of good nutrition practices in the communities,” Mr. Kasawa explained.

And one of the Nutrition Volunteers Chama Kasakula said the knowledge acquired from the project will be put to good use so as to sustain the gains attained so far.

Mr. Kasakula said volunteers have delivered hygiene and nutrition messages to all community members in the district.

He mentioned exclusive breast feeding, good sanitation practices such as using a toilet when answering a call of nature and washing hands with soap, digging rubbish pits and making dishracks among others

Meanwhile, the traditional leadership thanked the GIZ partners for working closely with government through the district health office to disseminate messages to their subjects on hygiene and sanitation.

Chief Kashiba who was represented by village head Nkomba appealed to the trained volunteers to continue with hygiene messages in the communities even after the partners pull out.

Luapula Province Permanent Secretary Mighty Mumba has implored school managers in Mwense district to take advantage of the increased Constituency Development Fund (CDF) to provide quality education to the learners.

Mr. Mumba was speaking at Kashiba secondary school after commissioning a number of CDF projects in Mambilima and Mwense constituencies.

Luapula Province Permanent Secretary Mighty Mumba says government is committed to ensuring that the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) is distributed equally to all corners of the country.

Mr. Mumba was speaking at the handover ceremony of completed CDF projects in Mwense constituency in Mwense district held at Kawama secondary school.

He said CDF is a pivotal initiative by government designed to foster grassroots development, empower communities, and address the diverse needs of the local people at the constituency level.

Mr. Mumba said this year, the local authority in Mwense will support 45 businesses, groups, and individuals with loans amounting to K4,595,000 which has already been approved.

“The government's commitment to equitable development across the nation is evident, as can be attested by the increase in CDF allocations over the past three years. This year, we have made substantial strides in supporting 45 businesses, groups, and individuals in Mwense. Loans totaling k4,595,000 have been approved, aimed at stimulating entrepreneurship, fostering innovation, and ultimately, creating sustainable livelihoods for our people,” Mr. Mumba said
He further said a total of k2,303,000 has been disbursed in grants benefiting 104 groups.

“This financial support is instrumental in driving community projects and initiatives that directly benefit our constituents,” Mr. Mumba said.

The permanent secretary added that 222 students in Mwense have been sponsored for various skills training programs at a cost of K 3,800,656 to equip the youths with the necessary skills to thrive in today's competitive job market.

He also said 333 pupils have been sponsored for boarding secondary school bursaries in Mwense at a cost of K1,068,000.

“Education remains a cornerstone of our government's agenda. We are proud to announce that 333 pupils have been sponsored for boarding secondary school bursaries in Mwense at a cost of k1,068,000, further underscoring our commitment to quality education for all,” he said.

The PS also handed over the first-ever 1 x 2 science laboratory at Kawama primary school constructed at a total cost of k950,034 and a modern ablution block and water scheme at Kapamba secondary school at a cost of k58,215.
