Lungu recently underwent chemotherapy, pray for him - Government

GOVERNMENT has confirmed that former President Edgar Lungu recently underwent chemotherapy in South Africa and President Hakainde Hichilema is in constant communication with him to check on his predecessor’s road to recovery.

Speaking at a press briefing in Lusaka today, Ministry of Information and Media permanent secretary Thabo Kawana revealed that the former President is currently under review just waiting on his doctors to determine the next step.

Kawana encouraged Zambians to unite in prayer for the full recovery of the former Head of State.

He urged the country to desist from dragging Lungu’s name into politics adding that the former President was not even active on social media as shown by his recent statement on the death of former cabinet minister Edith Nawakwi.

“Former President Dr Edgar Lungu is in South Africa for treatment. He called me to check on me for my health. We had a chat, even through that conversation, president Lungu informed me that he was done with his chemotherapy and that he was now just going for review so that the doctors can determine what the next step is. Maybe he’s to continue with another session of chemotherapy or maybe he’s to come back home, the doctors will determine,” said Kawana.

“Let us give president Lungu an opportunity to rest and desist from dragging him into politics. This is not the time to drag president Lungu into politics, this is the time to allow him to rest and pray for president Lungu as a nation. We are a Christian nation, when we are affected we take to God. Our former president right now needs our prayers.”

Kawana further dismissed assertions that there is enmity between the former President and President Hichilema stating that the two communicate frequently.

“Former President Lungu and President Hakainde Hichilema speak to one another and from time to time his excellency the President calls President Lungu to check on his brother, to wish him well and to ensure that all is well. There’s no enmity between the two presidents,” he clarified.

Kawana also called on Lungu’s family to take charge and ensure that Lungu’s name is dragged out of politics for he is currently unwell.
