The Republic of Zambia is divided into 10 Provinces, which are further divided into 116 Districts, which are further divided into 156 Constituencies, which are further divided into 1622 Wards!
A province is made up of several Districts; a district is made up of one or several Constituencies; a constituency is made up of several wards.
When you went to vote at the general election on 12 August 2021, there were several departments where you had to choose a person:
1. President; representing the entire nation.
2. Mayor; representing the entire district.
3. Member of Parliament; representing the entire constituency
4. Ward Councillor; representing a ward.
So, the land of Zambia is divided into several pieces of land. If we divide according to districts, then there are 116 pieces of land. If we divide according to Wards, then there are 1622 pieces of land.
Do you know which "ward" your home or work address is part of? Here's an example:
The "Full Address" for the Z-Mart Shopping Centre in Ndola City Centre is:
"President Avenue, Ndola Town Centre, Kanini Ward, Ndola Central Constituency, Ndola District, Copperbelt Province, Zambia"
Can you write your "Full Address" in this format?
Get to know about the "Ward Councillor", "Member of Parliament" & "Mayor" that you voted in. Know where to report when there are issues in your area!
No matter the size, shape or use of land for each Constituency, all 156 of them are to be treated equally! What that means is that the entire Lusaka District receives the "Constituency Development Fund" (CDF) amount multiplied by 7 (due to having 7 Constituencies) while the entire Chililabombwe District receives the CDF amount multiplied by 1 (due to having only one constituency). We guess it's the same with "Wards" & "Districts" (equal treatment).
