ZESCO EMPLOYEE, FIVE OTHERS ARRESTED FOR "UNPLANNED LOAD SHEDDING" SCHEME
Authorities left in shock as enterprising suspects attempt to privatize electricity—one transformer at a time.
Ndola, Zambia, January 30 – In what might be the boldest "energy-saving initiative" yet, a ZESCO Limited employee and five men from Masaiti have been arrested for allegedly "liberating" 11 transformers from the national grid—perhaps in an attempt to introduce a personal power-sharing program.
Copperbelt police commanding officer Peacewell Mweemba revealed that ZESCO security officers were tipped off by concerned citizens who noticed an unusual collection of transformer shells at Emmanuel Farm in Mundawanga. A prompt investigation confirmed what authorities are calling a specialized load-shedding scheme.
"In the dead of night, between 23:00 hours on Sunday and 05:00 hours on Monday, officers carried out an operation in Mundawanga, leading to the arrest of six men who apparently believed in alternative energy solutions—by redistributing ZESCO's equipment," Mweemba stated.
The arrested individuals include ZESCO employee Enock Sandala, 32, and his enthusiastic business associates: Mouldson Kalunga, 41, Alfred Kalunga, 37, Patson Simugweengwe, 35, and Victor Ng’uni, 34, all of Masaiti.
While authorities suspect the group had ambitious plans for "decentralized power distribution," the nation has been left wondering—was this a desperate act against load shedding, or just the latest version of self-imposed power reforms?
For now, the suspects will be facing the law instead of enjoying their own exclusive power supply.
