Surgeons at Ndola Teaching Hospital remove shocking metal objects from patient’s stomach!

In a rare and extraordinary surgical procedure, a team of surgeons at Ndola Teaching Hospital has successfully removed an astonishing assortment of metallic foreign objects from the stomach of a 30-year-old male patient, in a case that has stunned even the most experienced medical professionals.

The patient, a resident of Ndola’s , was rushed to NTH after suffering severe abdominal pain and being unable to pass stool for an entire week. Following a medical assessment, the doctors ordered abdominal and chest X-rays and what they found was nothing short of shocking.

The scans revealed that the patient’s stomach and intestines were packed with numerous metallic objects, causing a dangerous obstruction and placing his life in immediate danger.

He was rushed to theatre, where the surgical team worked for more than three hours in a high-stakes operation to remove the items.

When the procedure was completed, the surgical table told the full story: among the extracted objects were 2 car spark plugs, 17 sharp wire pieces, one car key and two padlock keys, s 4 one-kwacha coins (including one lodged in the large intestine), 4 bolts, 1 female bra wire stabilizer, and a ring wire. The shocking collection was carefully laid out on a surgical cloth for documentation.

Some of the items had caused perforations in the stomach wall, with prolonged retention causing chronic gastric outlet obstruction

Many objects were also observed to be heavily corroded, suggesting they had been ingested over a long period of time.
“It’s not unusual to find foreign objects in a patient’s stomach, but this quantity and variety is something we hardly ever see this appears to have been a gradual ingestion over time.”Dr. Mushikita Songwe, one of the surgeons narrated.

Thanks to the quick thinking of the medical team and the skill of the surgeons, the patient survived. He is now in stable condition and undergoing further assessments

The skilled surgical and theatre team included: Surgeons: Dr. Ngoma Royd, Dr. Mushikita Songwe, and Dr. Muswala Dominic Anaesthetist: Dr. Kabamba Scrub Nurse: RN Kennedy Bijou, Runner: RN Beatrice Mulenga, Recovery Theatre Operating Nurse (RTON): Paul Kampinda

Former First Lady Mama Esther Lungu,Family Appeal

The family of the Late Zambia's Sixth President, Dr. Edgar Chagwa Lungu has successfully filed an appeal against the judgment delivered on Friday, 8th August 2025 by the Gauteng High Court in Pretoria.

Earlier the South African High court ruled that Zambia's government could repatriate the body of former President Edgar Lungu and give him a state funeral, despite the family's opposition.

Acting Judge President Aubrey Ledwaba delivered the ruling and emphasized that public interest overrides personal wishes when it comes to the burial of a former head of state. He was part of a full bench of three judges.

📢 BREAKING NEWS | SOUTH AFRICAN COURT RULES FORMER PRESIDENT LUNGU TO BE BURIED IN ZAMBIA 🇿🇲

By Justina Matandiko Mukuka

A South African court has ruled that late former Zambian President Edgar Lungu will be buried in Zambia, siding with the Zambian Government in a legal dispute with his family over the final resting place.

The court’s decision clears the way for President Lungu’s burial at the official Presidential Burial Site opposite the Cabinet Office in Lusaka a resting place for Zambia’s past leaders.

The family had sought to have him buried outside Zambia, citing personal and emotional reasons, but the Government, represented by Attorney General Mulilo Kabesha, maintained that the former president should be laid to rest in line with national tradition.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has called on the opposition Patriotic Front (PF) and all supporters to respect the court ruling and mourn President Lungu with dignity, emphasizing that he was a leader for all Zambians.

Preparations for the state funeral are expected to resume, President Lungu served as Zambia’s sixth head of state from 2015 to 2021 and will be honoured alongside five other former presidents.

COPPERBELT IN CRISIS AND SINO METALS DISASTER HIGHLIGHTS NEED FOR STRICTER REGULATIONS

A Ndola-based good governance activist has expressed sadness over the recent development where the US government has ordered its diplomats to leave Kitwe and surrounding areas on the Copperbelt following the pollution of water bodies caused by Sino Metals earlier this year.

Arden Matafwali has wondered whether the Zambian government is doing anything to ensure the safety of its citizens.

Mr. Matafwali has noted that this is not the first time that the country has recorded such an environmental contamination case but charges the government has taken a very casual approach towards issues that pertain to human health.

He says the Zambia Environmental Management Agency is expected to work in collaboration with the Ministry of Mines to ensure that mining firms do not pollute the environment.

Mr. Matafwali is, however, disappointed that every time citizens report cases of environmental pollution and contamination, the government always rushes to compensation instead of addressing the matter at hand.

He says it is regrettable that such a serious matter had to be raised by a foreign government while Zambia has remained mute.

Meanwhile, the government says that laboratory results show that the pH levels in the water around the affected areas on the Copperbelt have normalized and that the commodity is safe for human and animal consumption.

Chief Government Spokesperson Cornelius Mweetwa says the immediate danger to human and aquatic life has since been averted.

He says there is no cause for alarm as the pollution happened at the beginning of this year and that there is no need for panic from both the local and international community regarding the situation. Mr. Mweetwa said this today during a press briefing in Lusaka today.

On the 18th of February 2025, there was a failure of the tailings dam at Sino Metals which led to the suspension of operations at the mining firm.
