IMMIGRATION APPREHENDS SIX FOREIGN NATIONALS FOR ATTEMPTING TO FRAUDULENTLY OBTAIN NRCs AND 41 OTHERS FOR VARIOUS IMMIGRATION OFFENCES

The Department of Immigration in Lusaka and Chienge on Tuesday, 28th October, 2025 apprehended six (6) foreign nationals for attempting to fraudulently obtain Green Zambian National Registration Cards (NRCs) during the ongoing mobile registration exercise.

In Lusaka, four (4) Malawians identified as Mary Chumbu (20), Yotam Mwale (20), Brenda Phiri (20), and Jeremiah Phiri (19) were apprehended at Chilenje Community Hall together with a 71-year-old Zambian woman, Bertha Wilima, who was aiding them. Similarly, in Chienge District, two (2) Congolese nationals, Gift Mwewa (23) and Shadreck Mulesha (19), were apprehended at Katele Primary School alongside a 61-year-old Zambian, Gibson Chitandala, who was assisting them.

Meanwhile, the Lusaka Regional Immigration Office on the same day apprehended thirty-nine (39) suspected illegal immigrants aged between 18 and 40 during a routine clean-up operation conducted in Kanyama, Makeni, Kasupe, Barlastone, Lilanda, and Misisi areas. Those apprehended comprised thirty-three (33) Burundians, three (3) Congolese, and three (3) Rwandans, all of whom were undocumented. Some were found trading in shops, while others were discovered at bakeries making early morning bread orders for resale without valid Immigration Permits. Two (2) Zambian nationals were also apprehended for obstructing the officers in the ex*****on of duty. All have since been charged with various offences and are currently detained pending court appearances.

In another development, the Lusaka Magistrate Court on 27th October, 2025 convicted Samuel Bitangimana (31), a Burundian, for failing to appear before the nearest Immigration Officer upon entry into Zambia and for unlawful stay. He was apprehended on 12th October, 2025 in Bauleni after failing to produce documentation proving his lawful status. He was sentenced to pay a fine of

BREAKING NEWS: Shooting at Tanzania–Zambia Border

Fm-Nakonde

Three people, two Zambians and one Tanzanian have been shot and injured at the Malawi–Malawi trading area between Tunduma Tanzania and Nakonde (Zambia).

The victims, aged between 15 and 30, have been rushed to Nakonde District Hospital where they are receiving treatment.

One of them said they were in the “no man’s land” area when the shooting occurred.

The incident happened as Tanzania holds its national elections, amid heightened tension in the country.

Reports indicate that Tanzanian police have been firing tear gas and blocking public gatherings, allowing only people in voting lines to proceed.

The Tunduma–Nakonde border is one of the busiest crossings in the region, with the two towns situated only a few hundred meters apart, divided mainly by customs.

The area sees frequent movement of people and goods, and it is common for Tanzanians to cross into Nakonde for medical treatment, education, and other services due to the towns’ close social and economic ties.

The Zambian gate at customs has been temporarily closed, and there is now heavy traffic and congestion in Nakonde town.

Authorities from Zambia have been contacted but are yet to release official statements.

The Chief Executive Officer of the Katima Mulilo Town Council, Raphael Liswaniso, has been suspended indefinitely and without salary or benefits, with all council properties withdrawn except for a cellphone.

The suspension is to facilitate investigations into governance issues, following the removal of the entire council by the Minister of Urban and Rural Development, James Sankwasa, in August, over mismanagement and the unauthorised exchange of land for vehicles.

The Minister of Urban and Rural Development has seconded an administrator to oversee the administration of the town's affairs.
