IMMIGRATION APPREHENDS SIX FOREIGN NATIONALS FOR ATTEMPTING TO FRAUDULENTLY OBTAIN NRCs AND 41 OTHERS FOR VARIOUS IMMIGRATION OFFENCES
The Department of Immigration in Lusaka and Chienge on Tuesday, 28th October, 2025 apprehended six (6) foreign nationals for attempting to fraudulently obtain Green Zambian National Registration Cards (NRCs) during the ongoing mobile registration exercise.
In Lusaka, four (4) Malawians identified as Mary Chumbu (20), Yotam Mwale (20), Brenda Phiri (20), and Jeremiah Phiri (19) were apprehended at Chilenje Community Hall together with a 71-year-old Zambian woman, Bertha Wilima, who was aiding them. Similarly, in Chienge District, two (2) Congolese nationals, Gift Mwewa (23) and Shadreck Mulesha (19), were apprehended at Katele Primary School alongside a 61-year-old Zambian, Gibson Chitandala, who was assisting them.
Meanwhile, the Lusaka Regional Immigration Office on the same day apprehended thirty-nine (39) suspected illegal immigrants aged between 18 and 40 during a routine clean-up operation conducted in Kanyama, Makeni, Kasupe, Barlastone, Lilanda, and Misisi areas. Those apprehended comprised thirty-three (33) Burundians, three (3) Congolese, and three (3) Rwandans, all of whom were undocumented. Some were found trading in shops, while others were discovered at bakeries making early morning bread orders for resale without valid Immigration Permits. Two (2) Zambian nationals were also apprehended for obstructing the officers in the ex*****on of duty. All have since been charged with various offences and are currently detained pending court appearances.
In another development, the Lusaka Magistrate Court on 27th October, 2025 convicted Samuel Bitangimana (31), a Burundian, for failing to appear before the nearest Immigration Officer upon entry into Zambia and for unlawful stay. He was apprehended on 12th October, 2025 in Bauleni after failing to produce documentation proving his lawful status. He was sentenced to pay a fine of
