👤 THE PRESIDING OFFICER: THE PERSON IN CHARGE OF THE POLLING STATION

When you enter a polling station on Election Day, there must be someone responsible for ensuring that the entire process is conducted according to the prescribed electoral procedures.

That person is the Presiding Officer (PO).

According to the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ), the Presiding Officer has several important responsibilities:

🔹 Conduct the election according to electoral procedures.
🔹 Ensure that adequate election materials are available before deployment.
🔹 Take care of election equipment and materials under their custody.
🔹 Communicate problems or challenges to the Returning Officer or Assistant Returning Officer.
🔹 Record the proceedings of the poll in the official diary.
🔹 Count the votes cast at the polling station.
🔹 Announce the election results at the polling station.
🔹 Maintain order at the polling station.
🔹 Supervise polling staff.
🔹 Ensure that all election materials and equipment are returned to the Returning Officer.
🔹 Perform any other lawful duties assigned by the supervisor.

The Presiding Officer is not simply another member of the polling team.
The PO is responsible for the overall conduct of the poll at that polling station.

Leadership at the polling station requires more than authority. It requires impartiality, discipline, attention to detail, proper communication and strict adherence to electoral procedures.

A good Presiding Officer does not improvise electoral rules.
They follow the law, ECZ procedures and lawful instructions.

🗳️ When the polling station is orderly, transparent and properly managed, the Presiding Officer has played a critical role in making that possible.

SAD DEVELOPMENT: SOLWEZI MISSING BOY FOUND DEAD

16-year-old Anthony Kifwannakene, whom we reported missing on 23rd July after he went missing on Monday, 20th July, has sadly been found dead.
Anthony reportedly left home that afternoon to go for work on his motorbike but never returned.
He was yesterday found dead in the bushes in Kyafukuma area. Family members have reported the incident as a suspected murder as his bike has also not been found yet.

Further details are awaited as investigations into the matter continue.

Blessings Kaputula, aged 16, was last seen on Friday, 7 August 2026, at around 16:00 hours.

Blessings is a Grade 6 pupil at Kimiteto Primary School and was last seen wearing blue and white clothing, white trousers and pink plastic shoes. Blessings has black shaggy hair and speaks Lunda.

Residential area: Quattro Kandemba.

Anyone who has seen Blessings or has information that may help locate them is requested to urgently contact the family.
