ZNS officers fired for mining gold at Kasenseli

THREE Zambia National Service (ZNS) officers that were deployed to guard Kasenseli gold mine in Mwinilunga, North-Western Province, have been fired for engaging in illegal mining.

ZNS commander Maliti Solochi said there will be no sacred cows and any officer who will be found engaging in illegal gold mining activities at Kasenseli will be dismissed from the Service.

Lieutenant General Solochi said the gold in Mwinilunga is wealth for the whole nation and that ZNS will ensure that it is protected.

“If there is anyone amongst our solders is who will be caught in the web, I think such a person does not deserve to continue serving, especially under the new dawn administration,” Lt Gen Solochi said when he paid a courtesy call on Mwinilunga district commissioner Harrison Kamuna.

He said there have been accusations that ZNS officers deployed at Kasenseli gold mine have been engaged in illegal mining and that the Service’s command has not taken it lightly, hence his decision to visit Mwinilunga.

“The President has told us to be selfless, sacrifice and above all, to be honest,” Lt Gen Solochi said.

Soldiers deployed at Kasenseli gold mine are under intense temptations because they are being offered money by some people to give them access to the gold mine but they have been resisting.

He said to stop the falsehoods that ZNS officers are conducting illegal mining, the command, in consultations with relevant authorities, will extent security to all the community pits.

“People should be patient because the mine will be opened, because things must be done in a methodical way and we should not rush,” Lt Gen Solochi said.

“But I want to assure the people that Kasenseli gold is intact but what they want is we remove the troops from there so that the place remains free for all.”

Lt Gen Maliti said going forward, whoever will try to entice the soldiers deployed at the gold mine will be arrested.

Mr Kamuna said the people of Mwinilunga are looking forward to the re-opening of the mine.

He urged the ZNS to continue protecting the mineral resource for the benefit of the country.
“The men you brought on site are very disciplined,” said Mr Kamuna.

Later, Lt Gen Solochi and his delegation toured Kasenseli to check on the security situation at the three pits – Inonge Wina, Tasila Lungu and Edgar Chagwa Lungu.

INDIVIDUALS, GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS, PARTY OFFICIALS AND POLICE OFFICERS USING THE NAME OF GOVERNMENT AND UPND TO COMMIT CRIMES ARE ON THEIR OWN - CHUSHI KASANDA

Government has observed with serious concern that some Government and United Party for National Development (UPND) party officials are abetting corruption and other illegalities, which are a total disregard of the rule of law.

Government is extremely disappointed that vices, including illegal land acquisition and allocation; illegal harvesting and transportation of Mukula tree; and illegal mining and selling of minerals such as gold, lithium and sugilite, are taking place with the blessing of some Government and Party officials.

This is totally unacceptable under the New Dawn administration, presided over by His Excellency the President Mr Hakainde Hichilema, and must be stopped immediately.

Government is fully aware of the schemes being used to keep the law enforcement agencies at abeyance. Lawless individuals are misusing the name of the ruling Party, and names of some senior Party and Government officials, as being the ones under whose instructions they are committing the illegalities.

Government wishes to state, in no uncertain terms, that those UPND Party and Government functionaries who will be found wanting will not be protected in any way. Perpetrators of illegalities are on their own and law enforcement officers, who will fail to take action against perpetrators of illegalities on account of their political affiliation, will be treated as accomplices and will face corresponding consequences.

This Government, under the leadership of President Hichilema, would like to make it abundantly clear that gangsterism, militia mentality and disregard of the rule of law has no place in the current political dispensation. The New Dawn administration is anchored on sanity and respect for the rule of law.

His Excellency President Hichilema is on record saying that the UPND administration will never condone corruption or any other illegality, no matter who the perpetuators are. Equality before the law shall continue to be the hallmark of the UPND administration under the leadership of President Hichilema.

The arrest of Luapula Province Deputy Permanent Secretary, along with District Commissioners for Nchelenge and Mwansabombwe, for allegedly transporting suspected stolen sugilite, disguised as manganese, should serve as an example and a deterrent to those wanting to engage in illegalities for whatever reason.

The arrest should also send a clear message to those who have been made to believe that some suspected criminals are being arrested for belonging to a particular political party.

Government wishes to reiterate that the law, under the New Dawn administration, is blind to political affiliation. Perpetrators of illegalities will face the full wrath of the law and there shall be no preferential treatment in the administration of justice under the New Dawn administration.

The nation is guided accordingly.

CYCLONE FREDDY TO HIT NORTH WESTERN PROVINCE

As government urges citizens in flood prone areas to move to upper land.

Meanwhile Government has identifies six provinces to be battered by Cyclone Freddy which has now included North Western Province and Districts to be affected the most could include Zambezi, Chavuma and Kabompo.

Other provinces include, Northern, Copperbelt, Central, Lusaka, Eastern and Southern Provinces.

Cyclone Freddy is an intense tropical cyclone which hit Madagascar on Tuesday.

According to Reuters, the cyclone has claimed four lives, destroyed 2, 267 buildings and displaced over 11, 500 people.

The tropical storm has also caused some damage in Mauritius, and the United Nations (UN) officials say it will make landfall in Mozambique on February 24, before potentially moving further inland to hit other parts of southern Africa.

Speaking in Parliament today, Minister of Green Economy and Environment Collins Nzovu said the tropical cyclone is expected to hit Madagascar in the next 72 hours and change course to Mozambique.

Answering a query posed by Chama North PF member of parliament Yotam Mtayachalo, Nzovu said the natural disaster is likely to induce moderate rainfall in the identified provinces, a situation that may cause further flooding in flood-prone areas.

"Our advice is that citizens should consider moving from lowland areas to upper lands until the rainy season or floods are over," Nzovu said.

He added that people should make sure that drainages around dwelling places are clear and implored them not to allow children dive in the flood waters, as they may contract waterborne diseases.

The minister further appealed to people to avoid crossing flooded points and bridges, saying such has already led to loss of life.

Nzovu also encouraged people to drink treated water, especially from shallow wells.

He noted that people ought to call 909, the toll free line for reaching the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU), to make flood-related reports.

Nzovu added that his ministry is working with the DMMU, the Ministry of Health and the Water Resource Management Authority (WARMA), as they continue updating the nation on the trajectory and the impact of Cyclone Freddy.

"Government, by and large, is ready for tropical storm Freddy," said Nzovu.
