Mob beats Luapula man to death over goats

A middle-aged man of Luapula Province with a good appetite for goat soup and meat has been prematurely turned into an ancestor by an angry mob which beat him to death.

At about 02:00 hours just as the same time that witches usually return from their nighttime duty, the people of the usually quiet Lende village of Mwansabombwe District were woken up from slumber by the noisy bleating of goats and other livestock.

Some, like James Mwabu aged 28, divorced themselves from sleep and went to check on the source of the noise only to discover that someone had raided his goat kraal and made off with two female goats.

Without hesitation and supported by the community, Mwabu braved into the cold and wet night in search of his beloved goats lest they end up on some village dinner table.

With efficiency of Sherlock Homes, Mwabu and the village caught up with two males who were wheeling off on a bicycle the goats which they had already killed.

At the sight of the mob, one of the suspected thieves bolted into the cover of the night beyond the sight and whips of the angry mob.

However, one of the suspects was not as lucky as his thoughts of a sumptuous goat dinner quickly turned ugly and fatal after the villagers competed for space to whack him with sticks and other offensive weapons until he was nothing more than a flat piece of flesh devoid of breath.

Confirming the incident, Luapula Police Commanding Officer Gloria Mulele confirmed the incident, stated that owner of the goats, Mwabu, has been arrested to help identify other villagers who booked the suspected thief a one-way Yango taxi to the grave.
