22 YEAR OLD PASTOR RAPES 18 YEAR OLD GIRL.

Eastern Province Police Commissioner Robertson Mweemba has confirmed the arrest of a 22-year-old man in connection with the alleged r**e of an 18-year-old mentally disabled girl in Chimwemwe Village, Chief Mnkhanya’s area in MAMBWE.

The incident reportedly occurred on July 16, 2025, between 13:00 and 15:00 hours, but was only disclosed days later. According to police reports, the suspect, Simon Ngoma, a church pastor, allegedly lured the victim, Martha Sumaili Bwalya, to his home under the pretense of needing help with household chores while his wife was away.

The victim’s mother, Esther Zulu, initially permitted her daughter to assist Ngoma, unaware of the impending danger. Martha returned home around 15:30 hours but did not disclose the assault.

It was only on July 29, 2025, when her parents were away visiting another sick daughter, that Martha confided in her aunt, Janet Banda, revealing that Ngoma had forcibly undressed her, covered her mouth, and r**ed her in his living room.

Upon examination, the aunt discovered that Martha was bleeding from her private parts, prompting the family to report the matter to Mfuwe International Airport Police Station. A medical examination was conducted, and Ngoma was swiftly apprehended.

Commissioner Mweemba stated that the suspect is currently in police custody and will soon appear in court to face charges.

The police have issued a stern warning against sexual violence, particularly targeting vulnerable individuals, and reiterated their commitment to prosecuting offenders.

MASUPE WARD COUNCILLOR URGES FRA TO EXPEDITE MAIZE PURCHASE OVER SANITATION CONCERNS.

Masupe Ward Councillor Juston Silungwe has called on the Food Reserve Agency (FRA) to speed up the process of buying maize in local depots, citing growing concerns over sanitation.

Councilor Silungwe said the current delays in maize procurement have forced farmers and traders to spend extended periods at the depots, creating a public health risk due to poor sanitary conditions.

He urged the FRA to not only quicken the pace of maize purchases but also to establish permanent and well-equipped depots in the area to help address these recurring challenges.

Government has announced the completion of rehabilitation works at Chipata Airport, which have been undertaken at a cost of 16 million Kwacha.

Speaking during a tour of the facility by government officials led by Ministry of Information and Media Permanent Secretary Thabo Kawana, yesterday, Chipata Airport Manager Lungo Mwape confirmed that the airport is now fully operational and ready to receive flights.

Mr. Mwape said the rehabilitation included installation of key equipment such as a scanner to enhance security and improve passenger handling.

Mr. Kawana, who led the delegation, commended the progress and emphasized government’s commitment to expanding air transport infrastructure across the country to support economic growth.

The improved facility is expected to attract local flights easing travel for business and leisure.

Nyimba Town Council has clarified its position on outstanding payments to councillors and casual workers, dismissing claims that the local authority owes up to eight months’ worth of salaries.

In a statement issued to Smooth News, Assistant Public Relations Officer Mrs. Milliam Chitimbiti stated that the council is currently owing councillors three (3) months' worth of allowances, while casual workers are owed salaries for two (2) months — not eight as claimed by Msima Ward Councillor.

She urged civic leaders in the district to follow the right communication channels when airing concerns, instead of taking unverified information to the media.
The statement comes amid growing concerns from councillors and workers over delayed payments, but the council maintains that constructive dialogue is the way forward in addressing the matter
