By Mable Gershom
The Chipata Magistrate Court has convicted two women of Chipata for insulting President Hakainde Hichilema using the digital platform TikTok.
Catherine Mphanza stands charged with two counts of prohibition of harassment or humiliation, while Mary Lungu stands charged with one count of prohibition of harassment or humiliation.
On June 20, 2025, around 10:00 hours, the two convicts, who were apprehended from Luangeni Village in Chipata, made three video recordings on TikTok, humiliating and harassing President Hakainde Hichilema, accusing him of killing former President Edgar Lungu.
In the video, the duo vowed never to vote for President Hichilema in the 2026 general elections.
The matter was reported to Chipata Central Police Station by a concerned citizen. Police investigations led them to Luangeni Village, where they managed to apprehend the two convicts.
In mitigation, the duo asked the Court for forgiveness, stating that they were drunk at the time they committed the offence.
Magistrate Kalusopa sentenced Mphanza to 18 months of simple imprisonment on each count and ordered that the sentences run consecutively, while Lungu was sentenced to 24 months of simple imprisonment.
He said the offence the duo was charged with carries an option of a fine of K80,000, but the Court would not exercise that option because Catherine Mphanza made two videos insulting the Head of State, while Mary Lungu made one video, but the insults were aggravating.
Magistrate Kalusopa ruled that in order to deter would-be offenders and give integrity and dignity to the office of the President and also those who hold the office, he was giving the two convicts, a custodial sentence.
The sentences for the two convicts are effective from June 24, 2025, when they were arrested by the police.
