UPND Mapatizya Member of Parliament (MP) Emeldah Munashabantu-Nkhata has bemoaned the low number of women in politics, government and other decision making positions in the country.

Mrs. Munashabantu-Nkhata complained that female representation in her constituency is very low.

She observed that Zimba that consists of 12 wards is dominated by men with only one female, Mrs. Annie Mutunda who is Zimba Ward Councillor.
She further observed that Zambia has currently four cabinet ministers with only one provincial minister who is running affairs for Lusaka province.

The law maker said this when she addressed women in a meeting held at Siamafumba Primary School in Zimba district today.

Mrs. Munashabantu-Nkhata said gender equality remains a key priority in the country through the promotion of women participation, good governance and accountability.

She said it was important that the country identifies the challenges women face and collectively spell out what could be done.

"Women involvement in national matters should be a priority. We women are not longer supposed to be behind the men folk because men today still feel and rule us even in governing homes," she narrated.

Mrs. Munashabantu-Nkhata acknowledged challenges faced by women in political participation and representation in Zambia.

She however, underscored the importance of gender equality such as the appointment of republican Vice President, Mrs. Mutale Nalumango.

Mrs. Munashabantu-Nkhata commended government for the strides it has made in addressing the factors that hinder attainment of equality between men and women.

“When we empower women as leaders and decision-makers, the community and economy benefit. Having more women in positions of power promotes gender equality,” the MP said

"I encourage you women to take up higher offices to help foster development in Zimba district and the country as a whole," she said.

Today we are going to talk about the methylated spirit.

1. What is a methylated spirit?
Answer: Denatured alcohol.

Spirit is ethanol that has additives to make it poisonous, bad-tasting, foul-smelling, or nauseating to discourage its recreational consumption. It is sometimes dyed so that it can be identified visually normally in Zambia it is coloured blue or purplish.

Denatured alcohol or spirit is poisonous; and it is bitter. Spirit as it is commonly called on the Zambian market is cheap and accessible.

It has various uses that range from clinical use for disinfecting wounds and surfaces and in barbershops as after shave.

But today in many parts of Zambia especially the outskirts the methylated spirit has been abused into a consumable substance where individuals have started making concoctions out of it.

It has been recorded that the mixture of the local beer brewed contains shoe polish, shoe glue known as genkem, paracetamol (Panadol) and a sweetener or Sugar.

The solution is highly addictive, manufacturing of the same has been going on for years and people have succumbed to it unknowingly until now when they have realized after many have manifested blindness which and or death if not properly attended.
Like in many parts of southern provinces which are Pemba, Zimba, Namwala and Kazungula districts respectively where people have been reported dead while sole are still battling for their lives in different hospitals.

What to do in such circumstances is rush the victim to the nearest hospital or health center.

Please refrain from taking such deadly and harmful substances.

Please Intensify sensitization in all parts of the country.

Report who ever might be abusing this substance to the nearest authority be it the police or neighborhood watch .
