49 of the 550 Soldiers Sent to Gauteng Missing After Getting Inside Camouflage Vehicles
GAUTENG – The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) has launched a search operation for 49 soldiers who mysteriously disappeared shortly after climbing into camouflage vehicles during their deployment to fight crime in Gauteng.
According to officials, the soldiers were last seen confidently boarding the military vehicles early Monday morning before the vehicles themselves seemingly blended perfectly into the surroundings and vanished from sight.
“Technically the vehicles are doing exactly what camouflage vehicles are designed to do,” said a SANDF spokesperson while staring intensely at an empty parking lot where the convoy was previously parked. “Unfortunately, the soldiers inside them also appear to have been camouflaged… permanently.”
Witnesses say the soldiers drove off in formation before gradually fading into the environment.
“At first we thought they were still there,” said one resident of Johannesburg. “But then someone realized we were actually just looking at 49 parked Toyota Corollas and a bush.”
Military commanders confirmed that search teams have been deployed but admitted the mission is proving difficult.
“You cannot easily find soldiers who are inside vehicles designed specifically not to be seen,” one officer explained while pointing at a patch of grass that he insisted might be a truck.
Authorities say they briefly thought they had found the missing convoy earlier when a group of officers surrounded what appeared to be a suspicious cluster of shrubs.
“It turned out to be actual shrubs, which shows how effective the camouflage is,” the officer added.
Residents in Gauteng have reported hearing occasional engine noises in nearby bushes, parking lots, and shopping centre basements, suggesting the vehicles may still be operational.
One elderly man in Riverlea claimed he nearly walked into one.
“I was about to lean on what I thought was a wall,” he said. “Next thing I hear a soldier whispering, ‘Don’t move, we’re hiding from criminals.’”
Meanwhile, the SANDF has reassured the public that the situation is fully under control, explaining that the missing soldiers are technically still deployed—just extremely well hidden.
“If criminals can’t find them, then the camouflage is working,” the spokesperson said.
The defence force has urged residents to report any suspicious bushes, unusually shaped trees, or parking spaces that sound like diesel engines.
At the time of publication, authorities believe the soldiers may reappear once someone remembers where the keys to the camouflage vehicles were left.
