Following the capacity strengthening training supported by terre des hommes schweiz of HCC youth representatives earlier this month, we attended an HCC meeting yesterday at Nkulumane Clinic. Among the participants were stakeholders such as government representatives, HCC members, the Young People's Network On SRHR, HIV & AIDS and Plan International Zimbabwe. The meeting was highly informative and emphasized the importance of Health Centre Committees (HCCs) in communities and their role in strengthening the health sector.
A myriad of issues were discussed but as a youth organization, several key issues stood out for us:
✅ Nkulumane Clinic currently does not have a Youth Friendly Corner. The Sister in Charge, K. Mpofu, highlighted the need to establish one so that young people can discuss health challenges and easily access services at the clinic.
✅ Shortage of basic necessities for pregnant women. This is another issue raised was the lack of essentials such as cotton for pregnant women. These supplies are crucial for maintaining hygiene, preventing infections, and ensuring safe deliveries. Their absence can lead to complications and negatively impact maternal health.
A key highlight of the meeting was learning that Nkulumane Clinic has a program that focuses on teenagers (from 17 years) and young women. The program aims to increase the number of pregnant women attending checkups and delivering safely. Men are also encouraged to accompany their partners for checkups and participate in postnatal care. This space is imperative is as it creates a safe, supportive and specialized environment where young mothers feel comfortable seeking services without stigma and intimidation.
