Story by Peter Chivhima
THE Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) says there is a need for schools to play a leading role in combating drug and substance abuse among young people.
Deputy Commissioner General Stephen Mutamba of the ZRP called for schools to play a leading role in combating drug and substance abuse during the ZRP Schools Merit Awards Ceremony in Harare on Friday.
Deputy Commissioner General Stephen Mutamba spoke strongly against the social vice.
“I wish to also appreciate schools, the unwavering resilience of communities against cholera and the general moral decadence. The schools should take leading roles in advocating against the evil vice of alcohol, drug and substance abuse that threatens the future of our children. Otherwise, tomorrow's teachers will commiserate with a heavy.”
He also issued a strong warning to teachers against abusing or exploiting students.
"I was briefed of a recent shameful criminal incident which paints a very dark image of our schools. Abuse of any nature on school children by teachers is a serious affront to the trust reposed in you as teachers. I do not want to picture that there are some among you in the same ensnare.
"School staff, you are in loco parentis, entrusted with children by parents. How dare you ponder wickedness towards children left in your custody? In any case, those children are your very own children to whom you are expected to be protecting and nurturing. Ladies and gentlemen, be warned."
Deputy Commissioner General Mutamba reiterated the ZRP's commitment to supporting the government's education initiatives.
