The National AIDS Council of Zimbabwe , funded by the Global Fund, implemented the DREAMS Modified program for adolescent girls and young women in the Mhakwe area of Chimanimani District. The program aims to reduce new HIV infections among girls and young women aged 15-24.
Nancy Rubaya, NAC Youth Officer for Chimanimani District in am interview during a media tour said "The purpose of this sustainable boarding facility is to provide safe accommodation for adolescent girls and young women who travel long distances to school, exposing them to risks such as HIV and Gender-Based Violence," she said.
She added, "This facility enables them to have enough time to study. Some girls were walking 10 kilometers to school daily, leading to poor academic performance due to lack of study time."
The DREAMS Modified program launched in 2019 provides educational support to adolescent girls and young women, including school fees, stationery, and uniforms. The program also established a sustainable low-cost boarding facility at Mhakwe High School.
Headmaster Mr. Collen Mutswa recalled the challenges faced by students before the facility "We had makeshift accommodations and a high risk of HIV transmission. Some students lodged behind shops or walked long distances, compromising their safety and study time."
Mutswa praised the National AIDS Council and partners for implementing the DREAMS Modified program, which now safely accommodates 57 girls. "The children gather food resources and cook together. A school matron prepares meals for breakfast and lunch," he said.
The program has yielded positive results reduced school dropouts, improved safety and enhanced academic performance. "We expect excellent results from our form four and six candidates who've benefited from extra study time and research resources including donated tablets and a 5kV solar system," Mutswa said.
The Mhakwe low cost boarding facility is affordable, with learners paying $60 school fees per term and $27 boarding fees per month.
Kudakwashe Mukono, a learner, shared her experience "I used to walk 10km to school, facing peer pressure and many challenges. The facility has helped reduce HIV infections and early child marriages. We now have time to study and are safe."
Tanatswa Madzima added, "Staying in a low-cost boarding facility has benefits we have time to study avoid substance abuse, and there's no child marriage in Mhakwe."
The Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education welcomes the initiative in Chimanimani district, implemented at Ndina High School and Mhakwe High School, which has secured adolescent girls and young women from HIV, early child marriage and Gender-Based Violence.
Schools Inspector Mr. Tendai Chisango said, "We're pleased with the program which has reduced school dropouts and protected girls from sexual transmission diseases and early marriage. We appreciate the National AIDS Council's efforts and hope for more low cost boarding facilities in the district."
The National AIDS Council partners with organizations in 2025 implemented programs like Sister to Sister, Male Engagement and Gender-Based Violence, funded by the Global Fund. The National Aids council supports implementing partners ZARCH and Plan International.
