Youth groups hail ED’s blue-eyed boy Machakaire

STAFF REPORTER

Youth organisations across Zimbabwe have unanimously praised Youth Empowerment Minister Tino Machakaire for his resolute and tangible commitment to expanding empowerment initiatives that are transforming the lives of young people nationwide.

The National Council of Disabled Persons of Zimbabwe (NCDPZ) applauded Machakaire’s pioneering efforts to mainstream disability-inclusive programmes within vocational training and skills development.

Recognising that young people with disabilities have historically been sidelined, NCDPZ said:

“What we now see is deliberate, purposeful inclusion. The Ministry is ensuring vital assistive tools, accessible training spaces and funding reach all youth, without exception.”

Highlighting strengthened government–civil society collaboration, the National Association of Youth Organisations (NAYO) commended the Ministry’s openness to dialogue during national youth consultations.

“The current leadership has broken barriers, establishing a platform where young people can openly challenge policymakers and shape national strategies,” NAYO said.

“While debates persist, this unprecedented engagement signals hope for genuine youth influence.”

The Content Creation Association of Zimbabwe (CCAZ), which represents digital content creators and creative entrepreneurs, also applauded Machakaire’s visionary focus on the digital economy and innovation hubs.

“Young creators are finally recognised as vital economic contributors,” CCAZ said.

“Thanks to Ministry-backed content-creation spaces, training programmes and digital start-up incubators, many youths now see the creative industries as viable, sustainable career paths.”

In recent months, Minister Machakaire has launched or strengthened initiatives targeting skills development, entrepreneurial funding, improved access to capital, arts support and expanded youth-with-disabilities empowerment desks.

Strengthened partnerships with civic groups have further galvanised youth participation and empowerment.

“Thousands of young Zimbabweans demand long-term, holistic empowerment — beyond short-term programmes,” one organisation noted.

Machakaire’s vision remains resolute: to forge a generation of “skilled, innovative and economically empowered youth” who drive Zimbabwe’s national development agenda with confidence and capability, delivering on the promise of an empowered youth populace shaping the country’s future.

Youth Empowerment Minister Tino Machakaire has applauded President Emmerson Mnangagwa for strengthening the country’s youth development drive after handing over 35 vehicles to the Ministry of Youth yesterday.

The vehicles form part of a total of 72 units earmarked for youth development across the country’s districts.

Machakaire said the new fleet will significantly enhance service delivery, enabling youth officers to reach all 72 districts more efficiently, engage communities and expand opportunities for young people.

“This morning, His Excellency President Emmerson Mnangagwa handed over 35 of the 72 vehicles earmarked for youth development to the Ministry of Youth. These vehicles strengthen service delivery, enabling youth officers to reach all 72 districts more efficiently, engage communities, and expand opportunities for youth empowerment,” Machakaire said.

He further applauded the President for prioritising the youth constituency.

“His Excellency the President, Comrade Emmerson Mnangagwa, for making his effort in terms of developing the youth constituency. These are the tools of trade that we talked about last time. And I want to assure fellow Zimbabweans that from now going forward we are going to see a huge improvement in terms of youth programmes, youth initiatives, developing various programmes that are youth-related.”

Machakaire said the ministry, though relatively new, had been operating with limited tools until now.

“If you look at it, this ministry is a new ministry but we did not have adequate tools of trade. But because of these cars that we have been given today we are going to increase our programmes,” he said.

He stressed that the vehicles should only be used for official duties and not as personal assets.

“You now realise that the ministry is now there, visibility, so I just want to emphasise to those that have been given the cars that these are not their cars. These cars are there to do programmes for the ministry and for the government and for the people of Zimbabwe.”

Machakaire said the handover marked the beginning of a broader youth empowerment push under national development priorities.

“So, I want to assure you that it's just the beginning. You are going to see a lot of programmes, especially in the NDS2 that is starting 2026 to 2030. Youth programmes, this is our drive and we need to make sure that everyone is on board. We are moving in the same direction to develop our youth, to destroy the issue of drugs and substance abuse, and also employment creativity,” he said.

He added that more initiatives were already underway.

“A lot of initiatives are coming, are on the way, so I want to say thank you to the President once again.”

Machakaire said the gesture demonstrated government’s unwavering focus on empowering young people and building vibrant, productive communities.

“We appreciate this support as a clear commitment to the future of Zimbabwe’s youth. The work of empowering communities continues, and together we move forward,” he said.

The full fleet of 72 vehicles is expected to be deployed across all districts to bolster youth initiatives, improve outreach and ensure development programmes are implemented effectively on the ground.

Ignore liars : EU MPs, ambassadors warned over Job Sikhala

STAFF WRITER

Destiny of Africa Network (DANet) Founder and President Reverend Obadiah Musindo has launched a blistering attack on opposition figure Job Sikhala, warning Western powers not to rely on what he described as “fabrications” meant to discredit Zimbabwe.

This follows Sikhala’s address to European Union MPs in which he claimed rampant human rights abuses were taking place in the country.

Musindo said Western institutions risked repeating past mistakes by believing unverified allegations from individuals driven by desperation, internal political fights and the pursuit of donor funding.

He accused Sikhala of deliberately misleading foreign officials.

“First of all, I want to say that Job Sikala is a liar, and he told the European MPs complete lies,” he said.

Drawing parallels with events outside the country, Musindo added: “This is similar to what happened in South Africa, where a few individuals lied to the President of the United States, claiming that white people were being massacred… Donald Trump accepted it without investigating, and instead of harming South Africa, the country ended up gaining international sympathy.”

According to Musindo, Sikhala’s claims follow a long pattern of opposition deception dating back to the early 2000s.

“They lied a lot during the First Republic against Zimbabwe, and Europe and America accepted those lies—only to later realise that most of the things said… were complete fabrications,” he said.

“During that time, there was an international campaign of lies led by Tony Blair… and together with George Bush they lied about Iraq.

“Tony Blair spearheaded an entire machinery of deception. He peddled falsehoods to justify the imposition of sanctions against Zimbabwe.

"Working in cahoots with Job Sikhala and some of his associates, he deliberately distorted the country’s image on the international stage. Their collective agenda was clear — to discredit Zimbabwe and ultimately they wanted remove ZANU-PF from power.

"He peddled falsehoods to justify the imposition of sanctions against Zimbabwe. Working in cahoots with Job Sikhala and some of his associates, he deliberately distorted the country’s image on the international stage. Their collective agenda was clear — to discredit Zimbabwe and ultimately they wanted remove ZANU-PF from power

He argued that the same trend contributed to sanctions on Zimbabwe.

“The opposition party under Tsvangirai also propagated these lies, resulting in Zimbabwe being placed under sanctions… not only Zimbabwe was affected; European and American interests were affected too. They donated a lot of ground to China.”

Musindo also alleged that Sikhala’s behaviour over the years demonstrated political instability and violent tendencies.

“Job Sikala, number one, is known to be a violent individual. Number two, he is known to be a man with mental instabilities when it comes to politics… a man of violence, a man of theatrics… someone whom European Union MPs should not listen to.”

He cited past incidents involving the opposition to argue that many acts of political violence were “internally orchestrated.”

“Now, why do I say his claims about his house being bombed are lies? Why do I say the bombing of Ibbo Mandaza’s place is an inside job?” he asked.

“You remember that on the day Tsvangirai was buried, there was an attempt to burn Douglas Mwonzora inside a house together with Khupe… The opposition had its own skilled violent perpetrators… They unleashed violence internally, yet portrayed themselves internationally as victims.”

Musindo named individuals he said were involved in intra-party violence.

“There was one guy, vanguard leader… Another one was Sikhala. These individuals were known for violence inside their party. Many opposition MPs and members who disagreed… were beaten mercilessly. You remember a policeman was murdered in Glen View by opposition supporters.”

He dismissed claims that ZANU-PF targeted Sikhala or other opposition actors.

“Why would ZANU-PF go after the weakest political party—calling it a party is even giving it too much dignity… Why target a dying, lifeless party?” he said.

He argued that the ruling party was at its strongest under President Mnangagwa.

“Evidence is there—the thousands who flock to ZANU-PF rallies, the growing support… People are going back to ZANU-PF because they were lied to.”

Musindo said the opposition’s internal fragmentation was partly responsible for alleged staged incidents.

“Before pointing fingers at ZANU-PF, ask yourself: who within the opposition does not want Job Sikala to emerge as a political leader? …the opposition members themselves are divided and hostile towards each other.”

He added: “In such a situation, the only thing these politicians can do to gain international attention and donor funding is to lie—to stage-manage violence.”

The savaged Sikhala saying he is a spend force.

"Sikhala is a political dramatist—a political madman. If Sikhala wants funding from Europe, he should present credible strategies… instead of lying that MPs are being harassed… or that there was an attempt to assassinate his children.”

He argued that Zimbabwe was on an upward economic trajectory and could not be destabilised by “political theatrics.”

“The World Bank and IMF have made positive statements. Forbes Magazine named Zimbabwe one of the best tourism destinations."

He further says, "Service stations are flourishing on every corner because there is a high demand for fuel in the country. We see so many cars; even if you come into town on a Sunday, you would think it is a Monday morning.

"That can only happen in an economy that is alive. Restaurants are full, new restaurants are being developed, and new shopping malls are being built. There is no longer space for small businesses. Even in town, big buildings are being converted into shops for small to medium enterprises. Large mines have reopened. Industries that had previously closed have resumed operations.

"A lot of things are improving in this country. Do not forget, many ambassadors and investors are coming into the country. Re-engagement and engagement policies are in place.

"Many which were put in place are bearing fruits. Why should such a President and his political party focus on a useless, technically non-existent opposition party? Why should ZANU–PF focus on a useless, irrelevant, isolated politician — a failed politician? People who have failed to manage their own political party. Why should ZANU–PF ever focus on destroying job seekers and other MPs?

"He is saying oposition MPs are being persecuted. I challenged MPs to speak for themselves. Why should ZANU–PF waste its time? He was simply trying to manipulate the emotions of those who are ignorant of the true picture of what is happening in the country.

"A true picture. A true scenario because those who believe Job Sikhala do not want to check the facts. Why is it — and this is a very critical point — that Members of the European Parliament are being informed of these issues by Job Sikhala and not by their own representatives? We have many European countries represented here by ambassadors."

He said EU representatives must investigate to see if Sikhala was telling the truth.

"Why is it that this information is not coming from these representatives? Why are they not informing them? Their local ambassadors should verify these matters and debate these issues.

"They must address and properly manage these concerns."

Musindo further warned that incidents such as the alleged abduction of legislator Joanna Mamombe were part of a pattern.

“Every time there is drama… we see staged abductions—remember Joanna Mamombe? That was designed to attract international attention. Job Sikala knows this. He is an enemy of economic, social and political stability.”

He urged Europe to approach Zimbabwe’s political landscape with neutrality.

“My message to European ambassadors… is this: this is not the time for Europe to damage its relationship with Zimbabwe based on political dramatics.”

He added: “If European MPs want to investigate anything, they should include us and appoint independent investigators—not those aligned with the opposition.”

Musindo concluded by urging deeper engagement between Zimbabwe and Europe. “Let them deepen their relationship with Zimbabwe, engage diplomatically, raise issues diplomatically, and avoid taking sides because it will affect European interests.”

STAFF REPORTER

Destiny for Africa Network (DANet) founder, Reverend Obadiah Musindo, has lauded President Emmerson Mnangagwa for what he described as unwavering and progressive support towards churches across the country, saying the Head of State has demonstrated true national leadership by safeguarding freedom of worship and recognising the pivotal role of religious institutions.

Reverend Musindo said President Mnangagwa’s commitment to protecting and promoting religious rights had earned him deep respect within the Christian community.

“We would like to express our profound gratitude to His Excellency, President Dr E.D. Mnangagwa, for the unwavering support extended to us as churches. His steadfast commitment to safeguarding freedom of worship is highly commendable,” he said.

He also praised the President for honouring notable Christian leaders, including Mutumwa Archbishop Paul Mwazha, who was recently declared a National Hero. \

Mwazha becomes the second religious leader to receive such recognition in the Second Republic.

“Honouring Archbishop Paul Mwazha with National Hero status speaks volumes. The President clearly understands the critical role played by churches, and this acknowledgement carries deep significance for us,” Reverend Musindo said.

Representing a wide array of denominations under DANet—including apostles, bishops, prophets, evangelists, youth leaders, women’s ministries and men’s fellowships—Musindo emphasised that his remarks reflect the collective appreciation of the Christian community.

“To the President, we say thank you wholeheartedly. His actions show that he does not undervalue the contributions made by church leaders across the nation,” he added.

Musindo further said the President’s posture demonstrated a strong nationalistic vision aligned with the country’s developmental agenda.

“By granting National Hero status to religious leaders, the President is effectively saying: what you are doing is vital. You are shaping the destiny of this nation and helping advance Vision 2030,” he said.

He urged pastors and church leaders to reciprocate the President’s inclusive leadership by supporting his call for unity and development.

“The President has shown that he is leaving no one and no place behind. No religious sector has been excluded. His approach is inclusive, and church leaders must accord him the respect he deserves,” he said.

Musindo added that churches should acknowledge that the President fully recognises their societal role.

“He is the leader of politicians, the leader of churches, the leader of all citizens. He has extended his appreciation, support and recognition to every denomination,” he said.

Reverend Musindo concluded by calling on Christians to rally behind the President and embrace his national vision.

“When we have such committed leadership, we must support it. Let everyone rally behind the President and embrace Vision 2030. After all, who among us does not want an improved socio-economic status? We all desire prosperous congregations and thriving communities,” he said.

“We extend our sincere thanks to the President.”

Let's revive Zimbabwe’s textile sector—Chiduwa

STAFF REPORTER

THE parliamentary portfolio committee on Industry has called on the government to impose stricter regulations on textile imports in an effort to revive the local sector.

Presenting the committee’s report during the recent pre-budget seminar, committee chairperson Clemence Chiduwa emphasised the need for collective action to restore the industry.

“Over the past 20 years, locally produced fabrics have been systematically replaced by imported fabrics, particularly from low-cost Asian markets," he stated.

"This trend has been driven by several structural and policy gaps, including: a lack of effective import management systems, tariff loopholes, the absence of deliberate procurement policies, and limited support from wholesalers and retailers.

Chiduwa clarified that import management should not equate to an outright ban on fabric and garment imports.

“Instead, it should aim to: introduce import permits and control mechanisms for fabrics and garments across the board, enforce proper tariff classification and border verification to curb under-invoicing and misdeclaration, follow up with importers and verify that stocks of fabrics are bona fide imports with the necessary duties paid, harmonise tariff structures to close loopholes that encourage fabric substitution and include key textile products on designated smuggling lists to improve enforcement.”

Protect local gas cylinder manufacturers--Parly

STAFF WRITER

PARLIAMENT has implored the government to increase duty on all imported gas cylinders in order to protect local manufacturers. In a report presented at a pre-budget seminar last week, the parliamentary portfolio committee on industry said local gas cylinder manufacturers faced unfair competition from foreign companies.

"Local companies pay duty for raw materials while importers of inferior already-made cylinders are bringing small cylinders at a concessionary duty of 20 percent, and 48kg cylinders are coming into the country duty-free," the report stated.

"The government must increase duty to up to 60 percent on all imported cylinders to protect local manufacturers. We have an LP Gas cylinders manufacturing company recently incorporated under the laws of Zimbabwe," the committee recom-mended. It further recommended a cylinder production line commencing with production from three million gas cylinders per year in various sizes ranging from 3kg to 48kg.

"We are currently awaiting Comesa, Sadc, and ISO certification, with aims to serve the whole of the Sade region with its high-quality LPG cylinders," the report further read.

This comes as the country has recorded a 17,14 percent increase in liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) usage over the last three years.

According to the latest Zimbabwe Energy Regulatory Authority (Zera) statistics, usage increased to 77,437 million kg from 66,106 million kg in 2023, and in 2022, LPG usage was 59.989 million kg.

Zera chief executive officer, Edington Mazambani, said in a recent interview that while electricity chal-lenges remained one of the main drivers of increased LPG usage, Zera has also made significant progress demystifying insecurities around its usage for heating in homes.

"Zimbabwe is facing an acute shortage of electricity due to the impact of recurrent droughts, which have curbed output at one of the country's largest power plants, Kariba South Power Station. Similarly, aged equipment at Hwange Power Station, Zimbabwe's largest power plant, has reduced its output potential."

This also comes as demand for power has grown significantly on ac-count of increased economic activity, especially in the mining sector, due to expansions and new investments in lithium.
