CAPE VERDE MAKES HISTORY: QUALIFIES FOR 2026 FIFA WORLD CUP
By Bloom Tizora
In an extraordinary achievement, Cape Verde has qualified for its first-ever FIFA World Cup, cementing its place in football history. The island nation, with a population of approximately 524,000 to 600,000 people, secured its spot in the 2026 World Cup after a commanding 3-0 victory over Eswatini.
The Blue Sharks dominated Group D, finishing with 23 points from 10 matches, winning seven and losing just one. Goals from Dailon Livramento (48'), W***y Semedo (54'), and Stopira (90+2') sealed their qualification, sparking jubilant scenes in the capital city, Praia.
This remarkable feat makes Cape Verde the second-smallest nation to qualify for the World Cup, following Iceland's debut in 2018. The team's success reflects years of focused development and the growing passion for football across the volcanic archipelago off Africa's west coast.
HISTORIC ACHIEVEMENT
Cape Verde's qualification marks a significant milestone for the nation, with FIFA President Gianni Infantino praising the achievement. "What a historic moment," Infantino said. "Congratulations to everyone in Cape Verde for making the FIFA World Cup for the first time. Your flag will fly and your anthem will be heard at the greatest FIFA World Cup ever."
JOINING THE ELITE
Cape Verde joins six other African teams that have already qualified for the 2026 World Cup: Algeria, Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia, and Ghana. The team's success is a testament to the dedication of its players and the growing football infrastructure in the country.
CELEBRATIONS ERUPT
The victory triggered widespread celebrations in Praia, with fans pouring onto the streets, honking horns, and setting off fireworks. Local reggae and funana music filled the air as people danced in joy, marking this momentous occasion in Cape Verde's history.
