In a move that will enhance public health, service delivery and environmental management, the Gwanda Municipality has officially decommissioned the Hlalanikuhle dumpsite, which had long posed a health and environmental hazard to residents and travellers.

For years, the dumpsite negatively affected nearby businesses, with traders suffering losses due to persistent foul odours and an influx of flies that threatened both their operations and the surrounding environment.

Residents particularly children as well as livestock and other animals, also bore the burden of living close to the waste site.

However, these challenges are now set to become a thing of the past following the Municipality's relocation of waste disposal operations to a new engineered landfill situated approximately 10 kilometres outside Gwanda along the Gwanda–Maphisa Road.

Gwanda Municipality Mayor, Alderman Thulani Moyo, shares more on this development.

Commemoration Day of the African Child on June 16.

This year’s theme is _β€œEnsuring universal access to water, sanitation and hygiene for every child in Africa”_. It reminds us that the fight for our children starts with us. The homes, schools, and communities we build shape the Africa our children will inherit.

To every woman :
1. Your health comes first. You cannot pour from an empty cup. Go for check-ups, eat well, rest. When you’re healthy, our children are safe.
2. Hygiene & sanitation start at home.* Teach the children handwashing, clean water, menstrual hygiene. Let’s be the example. A clean child is a confident child who can stay in school.
3. Protect your mind too. Motherhood, work, and community work weigh heavy. It’s okay to pause. Talk to someone you trust. Take 10 minutes for yourself. Your mental health matters just as much as your child’s.

Our children are watching us. When they see us caring for ourselves, keeping clean spaces, and speaking up for their rights, we raise a generation that knows their worth.

As women, we are the first teachers, first nurses, first protectors. Let’s keep leading with love, discipline, and dignity.
