Sheasham in stern Hard Rock test

FORMER premiership side, Sheasham's quest for a return to the top flight will be put to test when they face in-form Hard Rock at Baghdad stadium this afternoon.

The two sides are separated by six points in the race for promotion in the ZIFA Central Region Soccer League. Sheasham Football Club

Sheasham are yet to taste defeat 23 matches into the campaign as they sit on 63 points.

But they face off against a spirited Hard Rock side that has won their past six matches without conceding a goal.

Hard Rock Football Club are aware that any slip up today, will vanquish their promotion hopes.

While the Construction boys are not leaving anything to chance.

"It's going to be tricky because they are doing well,"said Sheasham coach Prince Matore.

"They (Hard Rock )have been winning and doing well, chasing us, they will be fighting for everything.

"What is important is to focus and try to do well when we play them, Hard Rock has quality players, quality coaches."

Matore however, feels this match is not a title decider, regardless of the outcome, there is a long way to go in the title race.

He reckons this season, the title race will go down to the wire as the two teams fight for the sole ticket to the Premier Soccer League.

"It's not going to be easy, whoever is going to win will probably have to reach 90 points, that is not an easy mark to reach, last year it was around 70 points," added the former Motor Action defender.

"The way Hard Rock are doing, it will be a photo finish, we can't talk about the championship at this stage."

"I don't think this match will decide anything. What is important is to take points each game, all games are going to be difficult."

Gwanda Pirates v Shabanie

Baba Harare speaks about his career, Christian belief

By Staff writer

MUSICIAN, Baba Harare has cleared the air over his career and christian faith, saying he remains committed to his beliefs despite returning to his Jit genre.

Earlier this week, Baba Harare announced that he was returning to playing secular music after a year long haitus.

This sparked debate that the musician had backslidden. However, in a statement on Friday morning, the musician revealed that Jit music was his livelihood.

Below is the statement in full

The past few days have been awash with responses to my original post about how the gospel industry—not the ministry—is exploiting and manipulating gospel artists. Unfortunately, my statement was deliberately misinterpreted to suggest that I am no longer a Christian and that I had gone back to being a non-believer.

The detectives pursued the offender and found him in possession of a black satchel and a brown carrier bag.

They proceeded to search him and found three shrink-wrapped rhinoceros horns.

The rhinoceros horns weighed 7.7
kg and were valued at US$240,000, police detectives also
searched the offender's house and uncovered four pieces of raw ivory
weighing 36.15 kg valued US$6,146.

"We will continue to work tirelessly to
protect our precious natural heritage and ensure that those who seek to profit from the destruction of our wildlife face the full force of the law."

River Valley upgrades sewer system in Woodlands Park

By Martin Mawaya

GWERU–The River Valley Group of Companies has upgraded the main sewer line in Woodlands Park in a bid to end years of recurring pipe bursts and blockages.

The project, which is 80% complete, is expected to be fully operational next week following successful test runs to check for leakages, company officials said.

The system has been expanded with a new 400mm pipeline, replacing the old 250mm line, to increase carrying capacity and reduce blockages.

"We have carried out the tests run on the new sewer line and we are are happy to announce that there are positive results," River Valley Chief Executive Officer Ambassador Smelly Dube told The Midweek Watch during a tour of the ongoing works.

Dube further revealed that they had installed a flushing system that was connected to a solar powered borehole to enable frequent flushing of the system when the residential area experiences water rationing.

She said the uninterrupted water supply from the solarized borehole will help increase the water supply in the sewer line and reduce waste build-up.

Dube added that the water shortages had forced residents to flush toilets less frequently, causing solid waste to clog the main line.

She urged residents to stop disposing of diapers and other solid waste in toilets, warning that such practices would undermine the upgrades.

Engineer Adonai Torerai, who supervised the works, said the new 400mm pipes cover 300 metres and were laid at an improved gradient to enhance flow and minimize siltation.

Meanwhile, the company says it was engaging Gweru City Council to address the continued use of the bucket system in some parts of the suburb.

RENOWNED junior football coach, and Bristol City founder, Mativenga'Sama' Musekiwa has died.

He was 52.

Musekiwa passed away on Wednesday night in Gweru after succumbing to a kidney related ailment.

A doyen of junior football development in the city of progress, Musekiwa is credited for producing some of the finest players to come from the Midlands capital.

Through his Bristol City project in Mkoba, he produced players who made a mark in the top flight.

Names like former Dynamos midfielder, Isaac Pitamuja, former Monomutapa goalkeeper, Tapiwa Mafunga, the late Simbarashe Zimora,Abton Chekai, Maxwell Mavuto, Frank Sikwila, Irvin Mugwamba, Talent Maphosa, Moenda Muchingambi, Munyaradzi Murandu and Adrian Banana.

This was a feat he repeated in 2009.

Musekiwa also had coaching stints in the lower rungs of Zimbabwean football at Big Valley Masters(BVM) in the Central Region Soccer League.

While many will remember him as a coach, he was also a player in the early 90s when he featured for Bata Power between 1991 -1992.

FC Platinum coach, Norman Mapeza is hopeful the draw against Manica Diamonds on Saturday could mark a turnaround for his side’s stuttering campaign.

After losing four league games on the trot, the Zvishavane side eventually halted the free fall in a goalless draw against the Gem boys.

This match was rescheduled after the death of FC Platinum midfielder, Brian Banda who passed away in a car accident.

The point earned lifted the former champions into sixth place on the log standings with 41 points from 27 matches.

Mapeza was relieved by the result and feels this gives his side something to work on.

“A point is a fair result,” the former warriors captain said.

Zimbabwe urges global partnerships to shield livestock sector from climate shocks, disease threats

By Martin Mawaya

NAIROBI– Zimbabwe’s agriculture ministry says it has saved more than 90% of its drought stricken national cattle herd through emergency feed and water schemes.

The ministry however, warned that recurring climate shocks and transboundary diseases threaten to erode the gains without deeper international partnerships.

This was said by Lands and Agriculture Permanent Secretary Professor Obert Jiri during a ministerial dialogue on livestock at the Africa Food Systems Forum (AFSF) in Nairobi on Tuesday.

Prof Jiri said livestock remains the “bedrock of livelihoods” for over 60% of Zimbabwe’s population and a central driver of the country’s economic recovery strategy.

“Livestock is not a subsector. It is the foundation of nutrition, jobs and growth in Zimbabwe,” Prof Jiri said.

MP calls for stiffer penalties for toll gate evaders

By Staff writer

GOKWE Central legislator Daveson Masvisvi says the country is losing millions of revenue through leakages at toll gates.

Speaking in parliament on Tuesday, Masvisvi noted that the nation was being prejudiced of revenue by toll gate evaders.

A lot of motorists have devised ways to bypass toll gates in the country’s highways, resisting the seemingly exorbitant toll fees.

The Zimbabwe National Roads Administration(ZINARA) charges light motor vehicles between US$3-US$4 on the toll gates depending on the type of road.

Minibuses are required to pay US$5, buses US $8, while heavy vehicles and haulage trucks pay US $ 10 and US $ 20 respectively.

However, the legislator feels, this errant behavior by motorists is depriving the government of revenue.
