Before ya’ll had AI, giving everyone 50 bland character options before lunch, we used to sit down and design the damn character. Batsi was one of those and I still think she is one of the prettiest characters we’ve ever made. This video is me looking back at the sketches, early versions, and the small decisions that gave her so much personality.

Do you remember Batsi?

If you do, you’re our kind of people. If you don’t, here is your official introduction. Back in 2018, ALULA created Batsi for Steward Bank, a digital assistant with a face, a voice, a personality, and yes, an actual fan base. In this breakdown, we go back to the sketches, the early design options, and the small decisions that made Batsi such a lovable banking assistant.

Pious Nyenyewa, was recently in Nairobi, Kenya, for the Africa Forward Summit. Came back with a lot to say about the people he met, the conversations he had, and the energy around African creativity, culture, technology, and innovation. Here’s his experience in his own words.

Our Head of Studio, Pious Nyenyewa, had the privilege of attending the Africa Forward Summit on behalf of ALULA. It was a valuable space to be part of, with conversations around innovation, growth, partnerships, and Africa’s role in shaping the future. As a Zimbabwean creative studio working across animation, culture, storytelling, and technology, these are the kinds of conversations we are always glad to contribute to.

A big thank you to Ambassade de France au Zimbabwe for making it possible for us to be involved. We truly appreciate the continued support and the work being done to connect African creativity, innovation, and partnerships in practical ways. We are glad to have been part of this, and we look forward to continuing the conversation.
