City Council Blitz Targets Roasted Maize Sellers in CBD

Harare Municipal Police on Tuesday cracked down on informal vendors selling roasted maize and wild fruits across the CBD, as the city pushes to restore order and deal with mounting waste problems.

City authorities say the makeshift stalls have become a major source of litter, with some traders allegedly dumping leftovers and packaging into storm drains, a situation blamed for the flooding seen during heavy rains.

During the blitz, officers were startled to find some vendors hiding their produce inside dirty drainage channels to avoid detection.

“The City of Harare is urging residents to avoid buying maize sold on the streets, as the unhygienic conditions pose serious health risks, including cholera,” the municipality said.
