MESSI WISHES TO LEAVE BARCA

Captain Lionel Messi has told Barcelona he wishes to leave the club immediately, a source confirmed on Tuesday (Aug 25).

The club source said Messi, who has spent his entire career at Barca, informed the club about his desire to leave by sending a burofax, a service used in Spain to urgently dispatch a document that requires proof to third parties.

The 33-year-old Argentine, who joined the club in 2000 as a youth player, has a contract with the Catalans until 2021.

The Premier League fixtures for the 2020-21 season have been revealed, with the opening weekend throwing up a huge game between champions Liverpool and newly-promoted Leeds United.

Manchester United and Manchester City will not feature in the first gameweek, which starts on Saturday September 12, after their European exploits.

Elsewhere, Jose Mourinho’s Tottenham host Everton in their first game of the new season, while Arsenal kick-off their campaign away at Fulham.

Kaizer Chiefs squandered a chance to move nine points clear atop the Absa Premiership standings as they fell to a 3-1 loss to Bloemfontein Celtic at Tuks Stadium on Wednesday evening.

Goals from Motebang Sera (two) and Victor Letsoalo spearheaded Phunya Selel Sele to a deserved win after Erick Mathoho had opened the scoring in South Africa’s capital.

Chiefs still hold a six-point lead at the summit of the standings, but having now played a game more than second-placed Mamelodi Sundowns. Victory for Celtic moves them up to 10th place.

FIFA Closes Ethics Violation Case Against Infantino

Fifa president Gianni Infantino has been cleared of violating the world governing body’s regulations after a preliminary investigation by its ethics committee.

Infantino is the subject of a criminal investigation over an alleged secret meeting with Swiss attorney general Michael Lauber. Both deny wrongdoing.

Fifa said documents shared by the Swiss courts were scrutinised.

“No aspect of the conduct analysed constitutes a violation,” it said.

Stade Francais Cancel Friendly Because Of Players’ Lung Damage

Stade Francais have called off their friendly against Toulon due to players having not recovered from lung damage caused by Covid-19.

The club, which put its side into isolation last week after an increase in positive results, estimates those affected need another week’s rest.

After consulting the league’s medical commission, the match on 27 August was cancelled for health reasons.

Last week, the club had a reported 25 positive tests among players and staff.

All Teams Sign Up To Sport’s New Concorde Agreement

All 10 teams have signed up to the new Concorde Agreement which will govern Formula 1 from 2021 to 2025.

The contract, which sets out the commercial terms of the sport, was first introduced in 1981.

Ferrari, McLaren and Williams announced their support of the revised terms of racing on Tuesday, with the other seven constructors now following suit.

World champions Mercedes had reached an impasse with F1 over the new proposals, but they have now been resolved.

Bayern Munich beat France’s Olympique Lyon 3-0 on Wednesday to take on Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) in Sunday’s UEFA Champions League final.

Bayern took the lead in the 18th minute of the semifinal in Lisbon.

African World Cup Qualifiers Moved To 2021

African qualifiers for the 2022 FIFA World Cup were pushed further until next year due to the coronavirus pandemic.

“Qatar 2022 [qualifiers] set for May 2021,” the Confederation of African Football (CAF) said in a statement.

“The 40 teams in contention for the five slots for Qatar 2022 will commence the journey between 31 May and 15 June 2021 with the Day 1 & 2 matches,” the CAF said.
