Your CV can't explain itself. That's what a cover letter is for.

Three things a CV raises but can never answer πŸ‘‡

❓ The gap. Two years with nothing on the page. The reader will invent a reason, and it usually isn't a kind one. One line β€” you were caring for family, you were ill, a business didn't work out β€” and it's gone. The gap is rarely the problem. The unexplained gap is.

❓ The career change. You can see how your experience transfers. Someone reading eighty applications in an afternoon cannot. Say it out loud.

❓ The requirement you don't meet. You've got four out of five. Saying nothing looks like you didn't notice. Naming it and explaining what makes up for it looks like judgement.

This is why "I am writing to express my keen interest in this position" is such a waste of space, it's the one place you get to explain yourself, and it's spent saying nothing.

Our free Cover Letter Generator writes to the specific job advert. Then add the part only you can: why the gap, why the change, why this job.

Quick test: when did you last actually rewrite your CV, not just add the newest job to the top?

For most people the honest answer is never. You made one years ago and you've been adding to it ever since.

Which is why so many CVs look like this πŸ‘‡

πŸ“Œ University modules still listed, ten years into a career
πŸ“Œ Your first job getting more space than your current one
πŸ“Œ A profile at the top describing goals you reached years ago
πŸ“Œ A layout designed for a fresh graduate, now carrying a decade of experience

Adding to a CV is not the same as rewriting it. But a proper rewrite takes an afternoon, so nobody does it.

Upload your old CV to our free AI Resume Builder and it fills everything in for you, flags what's weak, rewrites your bullet points with real numbers, and reweights it around the job you actually want now.

Two teams. Same kind of work. One is paid noticeably better than the other.

Nobody decided this. It happened because one manager pushes hard for their people at every review and the other doesn't.

There's a simple way to see it: work out the average compa-ratio for each team, everyone's salary compared to the market rate for their job. Then compare the teams.

What the numbers tell you πŸ‘‡

πŸ“Š Team averaging below 90% β€” you're behind market, and the good ones will find out
πŸ“Š Team averaging 90–110% β€” roughly where you should be
πŸ“Š Team averaging above 110% β€” generous, but check whether it's seniority or just habit
πŸ“Š Two similar teams far apart β€” that's a management gap, not a market one

Best use: when you're handing out annual increases, don't spread the same percentage everywhere. Give more to the people sitting low and less to those already near the top. Same budget β€” but you fix the structure instead of baking the problem in for another year.

"I'm just not a numbers person."

Maybe. But most people say that having never actually measured it, they decided at fifteen, based on one bad teacher and one bad term. πŸ™ƒ

Here's the thing: thinking ability isn't one single skill. There are several kinds, and almost nobody is strong in all of them πŸ‘‡

πŸ”’ Numerical β€” working with figures and data
πŸ“– Verbal β€” reading, reasoning with words
πŸ”· Abstract β€” spotting patterns and logic
πŸ“¦ Spatial β€” picturing objects and how they fit
βš™οΈ Mechanical β€” understanding how things physically work

Being average at one and excellent at another isn't a weakness. It's a direction. Plenty of people struggle for years in a job that fights their natural profile and assume they're the problem.

Eight free practice tests, scored instantly, with a comparison to others at your level. Do three or four β€” one score means little, a pattern tells you something.

When did you last check your salary structure?

Not the salaries, the structure itself. The grades, the ranges, the gaps between levels.

Here's the problem: pay structures don't break loudly. They drift. The bands were right when you built them, then the market moved, roles changed, one department got competitive β€” and four years later several grades are quietly wrong while the document still looks official.

Two things to do, on two different clocks πŸ‘‡

πŸ“… Every year β€” update your midpoints against fresh market data. That's the number everything else is calculated from.

πŸ“… Every 3–5 years β€” check the shape of the whole thing. Have jobs changed? Has the business changed? Do the grades still match the work?

While you're in there, check that promotions actually deliver money. If moving up a grade barely changes someone's pay, they'll notice β€” and they'll get their next promotion somewhere else.

Building or fixing a salary structure? Here are the numbers most people get wrong.

πŸ“Š Grades should overlap by 25–50%. Yes, overlap. A fully proficient person in grade 5 should be able to out-earn a brand-new hire in grade 6, because proven skill should beat an unproven title.

πŸ“Š Step midpoints by 10–15% per grade. Less than that and promotions feel like nothing. More and nobody can bridge the gap in one move.

πŸ“Š Range spread: 30–40% at entry, 50% for professionals, 60–80% for executives. Wider at the top, because senior people's market value varies far more.

πŸ“Š Update midpoints against market data every year. Redesign the whole structure every 3–5 years.

Why bother? Because without a structure, the people who negotiate hardest slowly end up best paid, regardless of who's actually doing the better work. Nobody decides that. It just happens.

"I am writing to express my keen interest in the advertised position, and I believe my skills make me an excellent fit."

Every recruiter has read that sentence a thousand times. It says nothing.

A cover letter really has one job: take what the advert asked for and show them where you've done it. That's the whole thing.

❌ "I'm passionate about your mission"
βœ… "You need someone who can manage stock across multiple sites, I did exactly that for three branches and cut shortages by a third"

The problem is time. Doing that properly for every application means reading each advert carefully and rewriting from scratch. By the tenth job, nobody has the energy.

Our free AI Cover Letter Generator handles the matching πŸ‘‡

Be honest, how long has that half-finished CV been sitting in your downloads folder?

It's not laziness. Summarising years of work into six bullet points is genuinely hard, and a blank template doesn't help. It gives you a layout and leaves you staring at empty space.

The trick is not starting from nothing πŸ‘‡

πŸ“Ž Already have an old CV? Upload it and the AI fills everything in, then tells you which bits are weak
🎯 Say what job you're going for and it writes your experience toward that role
✍️ Every bullet gets rewritten with a strong verb and a real number

Are you sending the same CV to every job?

Almost everyone does. Tailoring properly takes the best part of an hour, and when you're applying to fifteen roles, nobody has fifteen hours.

But the person reading it is comparing your CV to one specific job description. Anything they have to work out for themselves, you lose marks on.

Our free Resume Checker fixes the time problem πŸ‘‡

πŸ“„ Upload your CV

Best trick: run the same CV against three different adverts. You'll quickly see which job you're actually closest to getting, and it's often not the one you assumed.
