The Civil Registry Department joined the Ministry of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare, UNICEF, and the Embassy of Sweden for a joint field mission to Epworth under the Sweden-funded Child Protection Fund (CPF III) managed by UNICEF.

The Child Protection Fund supports the work of several Government and civil society partners, including the Civil Registry Department, in strengthening child protection systems and ensuring that vulnerable children have access to essential services such as birth certificates and national identity documents (IDs).

The visit highlighted how bringing civil registration services closer to communities is helping more children obtain birth certificates, securing their right to identity and access to essential social services.

Also in attendance were representatives from the Department of Social Development, Justice for Children’s Trust, and the Zimbabwe Parents of Handicapped Children’s Association (ZPHCA), who are working together to promote inclusive and accessible registration services, particularly for children with disabilities.

Commissioning of Mutare Provincial Registry – A New Era Begins!

The Minister of Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage, Hon. Kazembe Kazembe (MP), today officially commissioned the new Mutare Provincial Registry Office; a state-of-the-art facility that brings e-passport and civil registration services under one roof.

Powered by a 40kV solar system the facility is the second in Manicaland Province to offer e-passport services after Chipinge district and will provide fast, efficient, and citizen centric service delivery.

Previously housed in a dilapidated wooden structure, the registry office now stands as a shining symbol of Government’s commitment to efficiency, security, and modernization. The facility protects vital live records -permanent national data that must be treated with the utmost care and confidentiality.

This development is part of the Department’s broader decentralization strategy, ensuring that essential services are accessible across all 10 provinces, 63 districts, and 209 sub-offices in line with Vision 2030 and Agenda 2063.

Strengthening Birth Registration for Every Child: Civil Registry Department & UNICEF Field Mission

The Registrar-General, Mr. H.T. Machiri, today joined UNICEF Zimbabwe Country Representative, Ms. Etona Ekole, on a field visit to the Mpilo Hospital Sub-office in Bulawayo.

The sub-office is one of 20 sites nationwide supported by UNICEF through computerisation and solar power installation.

The visit, which also included Mpilo Hospital’s Acting Director Operations, Mr. Sithole, focused on assessing how these investments are improving early birth registration, strengthening access to legal identity, and supporting more efficient, citizen-centered service delivery.

Through computerisation and solar power installation, these sites are now better equipped to:

* Register births promptly, ensuring children receive their legal identity from day one;
* Enhance service delivery efficiency, reducing waiting times for citizens;
* Support data accuracy and reporting, contributing to stronger planning and policy decisions.

This engagement marks the first stop of a two-day field mission, which continues tomorrow in Bubi District. By combining technical support with institutional collaboration, UNICEF and the Civil Registry Department are ensuring that every child’s right to a legal identity is recognized and protected; ensuring that no one and no place is left behind.
