For over a decade, I was crystal clear about what I did. I was effective at it, earning national and international recognition. But even with that clarity, I now realize I was holding myself back. My story today is about the way you define yourself can be your biggest limit or your greatest liberation.

Think about a stove. Do you think of it only as a baking element, simply because you love to bake or that's what you use it mostly for? Or imagine thinking of it just for frying.
But here's the thing - a stove is also for cooking and processing food. It can bake, it can fry, it can boil, it can steam. It has multiple functions, but we often limit it to just one use in our minds. It is a cooking device.

For years, I've been telling people I'm a "digital marketer" who does web design, graphics, and branding. The problem wasn't a lack of clarity about my skills - I was always clear about what I brought to the table, and I was effective at it.
The problem was that the label itself was limiting.
It was like calling the stove a "baking element" when you know it can do so much more. I was describing myself as a specific cooking function instead of recognising that I am the stove itself - capable of multiple functions, adaptable, and powerful.

My digital marketing career is an expression of something deeper - my creativity which isn't a new pursuit. It's the core of who I am. It's the child who doodled, sewed, acted, sang, and told stories. That creative spark comes out when I'm crafting a strategy, training a team, or doing interviews. It's been a constant with me since childhood.
Long before I ever built my first website, ran my first social media campaign, or pitched a digital marketing strategy to change a client's ROI, I was already a multi-talented creative.
If you ask me to sing, I can sing. If you ask me to act, I can act. I can do dรฉcor, I can literally create in multiple mediums. This foundation has always been there.

Before major surgery a few months ago, I had an epiphany. It inspired me to start drawing and dancing again, listening to music and telling stories.
Before any title or certification - digital marketing, web development, graphics design, personal branding, AI, digital wellness, and citizenship... I am, first and foremost, a multi-talented creative passionate about learning and teaching/training.

This shift has been incredibly liberating. It means I'm simply a multi-talented creative who uses digital marketing, web development, and AI as tools to express myself and help others. The way I see things, the way I do things, has transformed, and it is infinitely more fulfilling.
When I defined myself as just a "digital marketer," I subconsciously followed the prescribed path of other digital marketers. But that robbed me of opportunities to fully express all the other capabilities I have that differentiated me. It limited my thinking about what was possible.

The central premise of my journey, and what I want to share with you, is this:
'The way you define yourself is your power.'
Make the time to discover and explore your core value.
I have seen the emotional crisis, depression, and anxiety that can arise when a person's entire identity is tied to an institution or a title.
What happens if your job title shifts, or you lose that position? Who are you then?
Sometimes we postpone how we satisfactorily identify or define ourselves until "when I have achieved my doctorate" or "when I am now employed." What if, like me, waiting for formal certification would have meant waiting for 10years and missing out on massive opportunities, national & international recognition?
My journey taught me that self-definition should be centered on what comes from within - what no one can take give or away.
