Piston Rings EXPLAINED: Secrets Behind Engine Performance Revealed:
A piston ring is a crucial component in internal combustion engines, designed to seal the gap between the piston and the cylinder wall. It ensures efficient combustion, reduces friction, and prevents the leakage of gases or oil. Typically made of cast iron or steel, piston rings are durable and capable of withstanding high temperatures and pressures.
Parts of a Piston Ring:
1. Compression Rings: Positioned at the top, they seal the combustion chamber, preventing gas leakage and maintaining compression.
2. Oil Control Rings: Located below the compression rings, they regulate the oil film on the cylinder wall, preventing excess oil from entering the combustion chamber.
3. Spacer or Expander (if present): Supports oil control rings to enhance oil distribution.
Working od Piston Ring:
During engine operation, the piston rings expand against the cylinder wall due to combustion pressure. The compression rings create a tight seal, ensuring the combustion gases remain above the piston.
Meanwhile, the oil control rings scrape excess oil from the cylinder walls, returning it to the crankcase while maintaining adequate lubrication. This dual action minimizes wear, ensures optimal power output, and prevents contamination of the combustion chamber by oil.
