Market Research has highlighted that 29 branches of the largest retail brands in Zimbabwe closed down in 2024. These branches were either OK, TM, Choppies,FoodWorld or NRichards franchises. Industry specialists concluded that these brands have been left vulnerable and exposed to direct competition from tuckshops, mobile shops and street vendors.

OK Holdings as the Chairperson of the Retailers Association of Zimbabwe wrote a letter to the Reserve bank of Zimbabwe and the Ministry of Economic Development and Finance to present a consensus among retailers that the currency volatility and the lack of protection from roadside retailers and Downtown Tuckshop is forcing them to close down business.
The interesting fact is that these roadside retailers and tuckshops are increasing their dominance and presence especially in and around CBDs!

One may say these large retailers enjoyed monopoly for long and were ripping of consumers so that opened room for roadside retailers with convenient and affordable goods.
However, one need to appreciate how these retailers operate. Are they fully compliant to municipalities bylaws? Do they comply with registrations and Consumer Safety laws?

So the broad question becomes, are roadside and tuckshop retailers the future of Zimbabweโ€™s retailโ€™s industry? Is this model scalable and sustainable for the growth of the industry. Can they be regularized so that they contribute meaningfully to the national fiscas?
