The Parliament of Zimbabwe has apologized for the power outage that interrupted President Mnangagwa’s State of the Nation Address on October 28, 2025.

According to a statement seen by Afrogazette, the disruption occurred while the Parliament was operating on generator power, and preliminary investigations revealed that a circuit breaker supplying the load had tripped.

The fault caused a delay in power restoration, resulting in part of the address being delivered without electricity.

Abel Gurupira, the Managing Director of the Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company (ZETDC), has been fired immediately after a major power outage interrupted President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s State of the Nation Address in Parliament.

The blackout plunged the chamber into darkness while the president was speaking, forcing him to continue under torchlight, which led to public embarrassment and criticism.

Sources from the Ministry of Energy revealed that Energy Minister July Moyo ordered Gurupira's dismissal and instructed Group CEO Cletus Nyachowe to take quick action.

An internal investigation is now underway to find out what caused the outage, which has highlighted the ongoing issues with Zimbabwe’s power infrastructure.

The incident has sparked widespread ridicule and frustration among citizens, with many seeing the blackout as a clear sign of the government’s failures in service delivery.

The timing of the outage during such an important address has increased scrutiny of the energy sector's leadership and raised new questions about accountability at high levels of government.

Mnangagwa Delivers SONA by Torchlight as Power Fails Again

President Emmerson Mnangagwa was on Tuesday forced to complete his State of the Nation Address (SONA) using a torchlight after the New Parliament Building was plunged into total darkness—a moment that left the august House stunned and murmuring.

The unexpected blackout halted proceedings for several minutes, with some legislators shouting that it was an act of “sabotage” while others groped for their phones to provide light.

Despite the chaos, Mnangagwa remained composed, continuing to read his speech for nearly ten minutes under the faint glow of a torch, earning loud applause from ZANU PF lawmakers for his calm under pressure.

Power was eventually restored shortly after the President wrapped up his address, but the embarrassment had already sparked whispers of déjà vu across the chamber.

This was not the first time the government has faced such a public power failure during a high-profile event.

Last year, during Mnangagwa’s parliamentary address, a similar technical fault plunged proceedings into darkness, prompting ridicule on social media.

This year, Vice President Constantino Chiwenga faced a comparable mishap at the Zimbabwe International Trade Fair (ZITF) when electricity went off mid-speech and even the backup generators failed to kick in...

ZANU-PF membership has surpassed 4 million following a nationwide restructuring and verification exercise completed this year.

The ruling party now aims to convert its growing membership base into electoral success in future elections.

According to the Central Committee Report adopted at the 22nd ZANU-PF Annual National People's Conference held in Mutare, 4,058,350 members are now officially registered across 81,167 villages and cells nationwide.

The restructuring program, which began in February 2025, was completed in all provinces by July 31, 2025.

The report indicates that the program took longer than expected due to the need for meticulous verification to ensure the authenticity of party cells and villages.

CURRENT AFFAIRS: A seminar room at SAPES Trust, scheduled to host a press conference today by a civil society group opposing President Mnangagwa’s 2030 term extension, was set on fire shortly after midnight.

The premises belong to government critic Professor Ibbo Mandaza.

Reports indicate that the arson attack was carried out by four men, who also abducted the security guard on duty, who remains missing.

Investigations are underway.

A poultry farmer in Harare, Lucia Nyamayaro, is facing a significant loss after being tricked out of 250 chickens worth $1,500.

The scam involved two men who paid her with a single $20 note and a bundle of old, worthless Zimbabwe dollar bills.

Nyamayaro reported to ZimLive that she was contacted through Facebook by a supposed customer using the phone numbers 0787393755 and 0788682398 after advertising her dressed chickens.

The buyer ordered 250 birds for $1,500 and arranged to meet at Strathaven shops at 6:00 AM, claiming to own a local butchery.

"The man I spoke to didn’t show up, but two others arrived in a Toyota Hilux, registration AFT 7625, saying they worked for him," Nyamayaro said.

They handed her a bundle of cash tied with a rubber band in $10 and $20 notes. After counting, she confirmed it was $1,500.

The men then claimed they needed to fetch keys from their boss’s house nearby and insisted they couldn't leave both the cash and the chickens with her.

Nyamayaro temporarily returned the cash, but the men insisted on taking the chickens.

As she loaded the birds into their vehicle, they handed her what she thought was the same bundle of cash before speeding away in their Hilux.

When she checked the money, she found it was a single $20 note wrapped around old Zimbabwe dollar bills.

"I could cry. I worked hard to raise these chickens, and losing that money is heartbreaking," Nyamayaro expressed.

The incident has been reported to Avondale Police Station under reference number RRB 6484751. Police are urging anyone who recognizes the suspects to contact them or call Nyamayaro at 0772972380.
