At least nine people were killed and 10 others wounded in a mass shooting at a tavern in Bekkersdal township, west of Johannesburg.
The attack happened just before 1am, triggering a manhunt for the suspects, who remain at large.
Police say the shooting unfolded quickly, leaving patrons scrambling for safety.
The South African Police also revealed that the attackers robbed victims after shooting them, searching bodies and taking valuables including mobile phones.
The incident adds to a worrying pattern of gun violence in South Africa, which has seen several deadly shootings in recent months, as previously reported by Al Jazeera.
Earlier this month, at least 12 people including a three-year-old boy were killed in a mass shooting at a bar near Pretoria.
In October, two teenagers were killed and five others wounded in a gang-related shooting in Johannesburg.
In May, eight customers were shot dead at a tavern in Durban, while last year 18 relatives were killed at a rural homestead in the Eastern Cape.
