Did You Know?

Mother Patrick’s Mortuary on Livingstone Avenue is one of Harare’s oldest surviving hospital buildings, dating back to the 1890s. It was part of Salisbury’s first hospital, built by the Dominican Sisters led by Mother Mary Patrick Cosgrave a pioneer nurse who arrived in 1891.

The early hospital had wards for just 16 patients, consulting rooms, a tiny room for cases of delirium tremens, and later a mortuary was added. Africans who sought treatment then were housed in a tent in the hospital grounds.

Mother Patrick worked tirelessly during outbreaks of smallpox, malaria, and cholera, before passing away from tuberculosis in 1900 at just 35. The little mortuary building stands as a National Monument, preserving early records, photographs, and even a Dominican sister’s habit, a lasting reminder of Harare’s pioneer medicine and the woman who gave her life to it.

Today our CEO Joseph Bunga was the guest speaker at a Telco Team briefing.

He spoke about ‘The Examen’, a prayer developed by St Ignatius of Loyola. This prayer is to help us all reflect on our day and remember what we have done, and to be proud of it.
