When crisis strikes, what role is the media expected to play?

In this reflection, Dr Wellington Gadzikwa examines the performance of the media in crisis communication, drawing particular attention to the Kariba disaster and the lessons it offers for how crises are reported and communicated

The reflection speaks directly to the purpose of the Zimbabwe Media Commission and the Professor Rukudzo Joseph Murapa Institute of Peace, Leadership and Governance (IPLG) engagement: to strengthen crisis and disaster reporting and explore how the media can better contribute to healing, peace, social cohesion and national resilience.

Because in times of crisis, how information is gathered, framed and shared can shape how communities understand, respond and recover.
