Zimbabwean motorists are now required to pay a mandatory US$92 radio licence feebefore renewing vehicle insurance or ZINARA road licences, following a new law signed by President Emmerson Mnangagwa.
The law, introduced through an amendment to the Broadcasting Services Act,aims to boost funding for the state broadcaster, ZBC.However, it has sparked public backlash, with many questioning the fairness of paying for a service they may not use.
Critics say the move is a hidden tax amid rising living costs, while the government insists it will support national broadcasting infrastructure. The regulation takes immediate effect ,and motorists without proof of payment will be denied licence renewals. Legal challenges against the law are expected.
