Throwback of the Week || MABHAUWA one of the greatest hits of all time
«« The song, Mabhauwa by Khiama Boys was written by Cephas Karushanga and given to System to sing. System did the lead vocals and Alick Macheso did the backing vocals. The song was recorded in 1990.
The song literally became a “national anthem” for years and it was the song that gave System Tazvida the spotlight and a name before he went solo. At that time, Khiama Boys was made up of Nicholas Zakaria (band leader & lead guitar), Alick Macheso ( bass guitar & backing vocals), Cephas Karushanga (rhythm guitar), Livison Chakanyuka (drums), and System Tazvida (vocals).
Later after feeling disgruntled over poor remuneration Karushanga and System left Khiama Boys to form Mabhauwa Express hoping to cash in on the success of the song but the project flopped and System did not last long with Karushanga. “In one interview with The Parade in 1996 System Tazvida revealed that he only received $800 from the proceeds of Mabhauwa despite the single having sold over 75 000 copies and won Gold three times.
Tazvida left to join the Sungura Boys before setting up his band Chazezesa Challengers in 1993 with the help of Peter who was playing with Nyami Nyami Sounds; Lunga from the Super Sounds and Kasongo Band; Lucky Mumiriki of Hurungwe Sounds and the Sungura Boys.
After going solo, Tazvida became a mirror for social issues and an advocate of love through his fast-paced, provoking and often-times very daring lyrics. Witty, entertaining but he also touched on serious economic issues on songs like Mushandi Ndimambo. He was a lyrical genius whose songs still resonate with the realities of today’s “mjolo” and social media affairs.
His siblings and band members tried to keep the Chazezesa Challengers momentum alive after the front-man’s death 24years ago but time has proven that the lyrical and creative prowess ran in Tazvida’s system.
