Zim Breaking News :The Zimbabwean government has announced an immediate crackdown on the procurement of luxury vehicles and excessive foreign trips by public officials, redirecting the funds to healthcare and education.
In a major move to reduce government spending, new rules will sharply limit the purchase of luxury vehicles and restrict unnecessary foreign trips by public officials. The directive is part of broad cost-containment measures under the National Development Strategy 2 (NDS2).
The policy, which falls under the strategy’s “Expenditure Rationalisation” pillar, aims to ease pressure on the national budget. By cutting what it calls “wasteful spending,” the government intends to redirect funds to critical sectors like healthcare, education, infrastructure, and social services.
“Over the next five years, we will adopt firm measures to reduce unnecessary and non-essential expenditure,” a government statement said. It identified luxury vehicles and frequent foreign travel as major costs placing an “unsustainable burden” on public finances.
The new measures signal a push for tighter fiscal discipline and more efficient use of public resources. Strict controls will now govern the acquisition of all official vehicles, alongside tighter regulation and approval for international travel by civil servants.
The government stated that the savings generated will help ensure more money is available for national priorities that directly benefit citizens.
