Delta Corporation has commissioned a US$12,000 solar-powered borehole serving about 90 homesteads in Zimende and Khatshana villages under Chief Malisa.

The project, commissioned on September 7, is expected to provide a more reliable water supply to roughly 45 homesteads in each village while reducing reliance on conventional electricity.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has hinted he could still be in power in 2035, five years after his current term is now expected to end.

Speaking at the Sanganai/Hlanganani World Tourism Expo in Masvingo on Wednesday, Mnangagwa joked that he would still be there when the event returns to the province in 2035.

“I will still be there, I don’t know whether you will still be there,” he said.

The comment echoes a 2018 remark in which Mnangagwa joked that he would “still be there” in 2030, a target that later became linked to efforts to extend his stay in office.

Catholic priest Father Regis Chikuni, who had been missing for several days, has been found dead at Parirenyatwa Hospital, the Archdiocese of Harare has confirmed.

In a death notice issued Wednesday, Archbishop’s Secretary Father Ephraim Murwira said Chikuni was found deceased at the hospital mortuary.

“It is with a heavy heart and deep sadness that we announce the passing on of our beloved brother, Father Regis Chikuni,” Murwira said.

The circumstances surrounding his death and the cause have not yet been disclosed.

Chikuni’s disappearance had prompted the Archdiocese to appeal for prayers and report the matter to police, who were assisting in the search.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has declared September 15 a new public holiday called Munhumutapa Day, according to a Government Gazette issued on September 9.

The holiday, which falls on Mnangagwa’s birthday, will honour the legacy of the pre-colonial Mutapa Empire, which covered parts of present-day Zimbabwe and Mozambique.

Fresh details have emerged following the death of Zimbabwe Human Rights Commission (ZHRC) Commissioner Dr Martin Muduva, who was allegedly attacked at his home after a dispute with his wife over an alleged extramarital affair.

Muduva, 42, died Wednesday morning at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals after suffering deep cuts to his head and right hand.

His wife, Lyliosa Chirara, 43, reportedly died at the scene after drinking rat poison.

Police said the incident happened around 12:20 a.m. Wednesday while the couple was in their bedroom.

According to preliminary reports, Chirara allegedly struck Muduva with an unidentified object, suspected to be an axe, during the argument.

She is then believed to have taken rat poison after realising that Muduva had been seriously injured.

Police investigations are ongoing.
