Today, we pause to remember the 427 miners who lost their lives in the tragic Kamandama Mine Disaster at Hwange Colliery on 6 June 1972, the deadliest mining disaster in Zimbabwe's history.
An underground explosion at the No. 2 Colliery, then known as Wankie Colliery, claimed hundreds of lives and left an enduring scar on families, the Hwange community and the nation as a whole.

Every year on June 6, commemorations are held at the Kamandama Memorial Site to honour the men who perished in the line of duty. The commemorations bring together families of the victims, survivors, community members, traditional leaders and mining stakeholders in a solemn act of remembrance and reflection. A minute of silence is traditionally observed at 10:25 a.m., the time associated with the disaster, reminding the nation of the immense sacrifice made by the miners.
