: Bulawayo Ward 1 Councillor Josiah Mutangi is at the center of a dramatic controversy after defying a court-ordered eviction from Rosebank Farm Number 10 in Umguza. Mutangi, who took control of the farm under a lease agreement with its owner, Zephaniah Matiwaza, in July 2022, has been accused of failing to pay a single dollar of the agreed $250 monthly rental over two years.

Court documents reveal that Matiwaza, frustrated by non-payment, successfully obtained a court order in February 2023 requiring Mutangi to pay $1,000 in overdue rent and imposing a daily penalty of $8.33 from November 2022 until his eviction. Despite this, the Councillor has refused to vacate the property.

On October 4, 2024, the situation escalated when officers from the Office of the Messenger of Court attempted to enforce the eviction. Mutangi reportedly brandished an axe and threatened violence, declaring, “I am ready to die with one of you rather than leave this farm!” Eyewitnesses and video evidence obtained by reporters captured these alarming threats.

: Harare, Zimbabwe - The Parliament of Zimbabwe has apologized to President Emmerson Mnangagwa and the nation for a power outage during the 2025 National Budget presentation.

Thunderstorms and high winds caused a trip at a 132kV feeder, leading to the blackout.

The standby generator also failed due to a power surge but was manually reset, restoring power within five minutes.

The power outage has drawn attention to the limited budget allocation for the energy sector, with only ZWL 259 million earmarked for the Ministry of Energy in the upcoming fiscal year.

Opposition legislators and citizens have criticized the government’s handling of the energy crisis, calling for more substantial investments and incentives to address the persistent power shortages.

Critics argue that without a comprehensive and long-term strategy, Zimbabwe will continue to face prolonged periods of electricity outages.

Parliament assured the nation that measures are being put in place, in consultation with relevant stakeholders, to prevent similar incidents in the future.

: Pakashatuuuuur. The board of directors of Choppies Enterprises Limited has issued a cautionary announcement regarding a potential sale of its Zimbabwean operations.

This announcement, in compliance with the Botswana Stock Exchange (BSE) Listings Requirements, informs shareholders of discussions that could materially affect the company’s market activity and share price.

Choppies, a prominent grocery retailer with 30 stores in Zimbabwe, is considering selling its business operations in the country. The potential sale, which is still subject to certain conditions and regulatory approval, aligns with Choppies’ strategic focus on profitable retail operations.

Over the past two years, Zimbabwe’s retail landscape has shifted significantly towards the informal sector, resulting in a 30% reduction in footfall for formal retailers like Choppies.

Despite the company’s belief in Zimbabwe’s long-term viability, the need for substantial capital to sustain operations has prompted this strategic move.

The board emphasizes that there is no certainty that the discussions will lead to a formal transaction. Approval from the Zimbabwean Competition and Tariff Commission is required before any sale can proceed.

Shareholders are advised to exercise caution when trading Choppies shares until further announcements are made. less
