God is Love, So Why the Pain?💔: A Bible Study on Love and Bad Choices. Ever wondered why a loving and all-powerful God allows suffering? This is Lesson 2, Love & Bad Choices, of our "Meet Your God" series, and we're tackling the tough questions! We delve into God's unchanging character, His infinite power, and His defining attribute of love. Understand the link between our choices and the pain in the world.

The 7 major points of the Bible study.

1. The Eternal and Unchanging God: The study begins by establishing God's unique attributes - His eternal existence, omnipotence, and unchanging nature, highlighting that He was and always will be Love.
2. The Divine Trio: It delves into the concept of the Godhead, emphasizing the unity of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, their shared eternity, and the boundless love that flows between them.
3. The Creation of Heavenly Hosts: The study narrates the creation of countless angels, beings designed to receive and reflect God's love, organized with purpose and order.
4. Lucifer's Fall from Grace: It vividly portrays Lucifer's exalted position, his descent into pride, and his rebellion against God, driven by a thirst for power and a campaign of lies against God’s character.
5. The Earth: A Theater of Divine Love and Choice: The narrative shifts to the creation of Earth, a stage set to demonstrate God's love and justice, where humanity is granted the gift of free will.
6. The Serpent's Deception and Humanity's Fall: It recounts the tragic tale of the serpent's cunning manipulation, Eve's deception, and Adam's fateful choice, plunging humanity into sin and suffering.
7. God's Enduring Hope and the Promise of Redemption: The study concludes with God's merciful response to humanity's fall, offering a beacon of hope through the promise of a Messiah who would ultimately crush the serpent and restore humanity.

Chapter 3 – Stockholm Syndrome

Imagine bank robbery hostages refusing to leave their captors even though the door was open for them to leave! That's what happened in the 1973 Stockholm bank robbery. This bizarre phenomenon is called Stockholm Syndrome, where captives develop affection for their abductors.

But what if the "abductor" is sin itself?

Chapter 3 of "Stronger Than He" explores the shocking truth: we are attached to the very things that harm us. We crave bad habits, defend destructive behaviors, and even hate God's principles that would set us free.

Romans 8:7 Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.

Sound familiar?

This book reveals the surprising way Christ breaks these unhealthy bonds and gives us a love for righteousness.

Genesis 3:15 And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.

Chapter 2 – Bodyguard Par Excellence.

How secure are you? Are you secure because of the law enforcement agents in the country, security systems or security personnel that surround you? If that’s the source of your security, then perhaps you should do some homework on how John F. Kennedy was assassinated.

The security threat often arises from the heart of those closest to you. My workmate told me of a relative of his who was startled out of sleep, in time to see the spouse holding a knife. You would understand that the divorce that followed was a security measure.

How about weapons of mass destruction? Security from nuclear warheads is overrated. Firstly, it is certain this world will not be brought to its end by a nuclear war. Second, who can defend you from earthquakes, tsunamis, epidemics and the final blow thrown at you by the ageing process?

The only security system you can and should trust is one that can read the human heart, can see into the future, has power above all man-made weapons and has authority over nature, including death. That is the Bodyguard par Excellence.

He needs no introduction.

That leads many to ask some important questions. That passage below is from my book “Stronger Than He.”

If Jesus is all-powerful, all-knowing and so loving, why do bad things still happen to those who accept Him? Why do Christians die from murder and accidents if He is their bodyguard? Why do some believers lose their jobs and struggle to support their families, if Jesus knew about it in advance? Why does He allow destruction from floods, earthquakes, tornadoes, famine and disease if nature is obedient to His word? All He has to do is give the command and all these problems will come to an end, simple, right?

It is not that simple.

A mother is stronger and wiser than her ten-month-old daughter who has just begun taking her first steps. Many are the falls; some harder than others. The mother, in sympathy and love for her child, could easily end these bumps and bruises, cries and screams, by simply carrying her infant around, just as she had been doing from her birth till now. Since she is stronger and able, she could continue carrying her baby on her back, pram or baby carrier. That way the apple of her eye, the object of her affections, would not get hurt. She could do it, but she does not do it. Why? The mother has the vision that her daughter will one day walk, run, skip and dance. These things are probably out of the toddler’s mind but they are certainly in the loving mother’s heart. She ensures that sharp objects are out of the way, that her baby is guarded against stairs, that pots of hot water are out of the baby’s reach, but the loving mother permits her daughter to go through the painful process of tumbles and falls. Mother feels the pain when her little one knocks her head and scraps her knee. Nonetheless, she does not carry her baby around to prevent all falls. The loving mother, often our first, longest-serving and most committed human bodyguard, permits these episodes of pain because it is necessary for the greater good in our lives. Jesus, our greatest and most loving bodyguard, does the same. (End of Quote)

You can still be secure though exposed to so many risks. Get your copy of “Stronger Than He.” It is a step towards solid security.

Chapter 1: Hostage Rescue (Part 2)Luke 11:21-22 When a strong man armed keepeth his palace, his goods are in peace: But ...
21/02/2024

Chapter 1: Hostage Rescue (Part 2)

Luke 11:21-22 When a strong man armed keepeth his palace, his goods are in peace: But when a stronger than he shall come upon him, and overcome him, he taketh from him all his armour wherein he trusted, and divideth his spoils.

The illustration is simple to grasp. The strong man is Satan, or a demon, which controls the emotions, body and thoughts of an individual. He will only cede control when someone stronger displaces him, as the lions dislodged the seven abductors. And who is stronger than the devil? Who has the power to cast out demons? Speculation is uncalled for as a practical demonstration was given before the illustration was given.

Luke 11:14 And he was casting out a devil, and it was dumb. And it came to pass, when the devil was gone out, the dumb spake; and the people wondered.

Jesus is stronger than he, Christ is the only hope for the demon-possessed, devil-harassed hostage.

“But”, the exclamation can be instantly heard, “Jesus is not with us today in 2020. He died, resurrected and ascended almost two millennia ago”. True, today He is not physically with us on earth, but we have someone just as effective, just as powerful as Christ was. In fact, not only are we discussing a deliverer who is just as powerful as Christ was, but the Bible shows us that the power that Christ used to cast to devils is still available on earth today. You see, Christ said that He was evicting Satan from the hearts of men by the power of the Holy Spirit.

Matt 12:28-29 But if I cast out devils by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God is come unto you. Or else how can one enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he first bind the strong man? and then he will spoil his house.

It is by the Spirit of God that Jesus was stronger than Satan and it is by the Holy Spirit that Christ cast out devils. What follows is the sweet part. The Holy Spirit is still with us today. How do we know this? Jesus promised that the Spirit of God would be with us even after His ascension. The Comforter has been with us and will continue to do so as long as time shall last, as is clearly shown, the Comforter is the Holy Spirit.

John 14:16, 26 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;… But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.

No demonic force, singular or combined, can ever possess the heart, mind and body of the person who has the Holy Spirit dwelling in him or her; for the Spirit of God is stronger than all legions of demons united. You may be bombarded by Satanic influences: as a tsunami, temptations may violently pour against the soul, uninvited demon inspired music may blatantly advocate impure thoughts, movies may aggressively fuel violent impulses, social influences may pressurize you to indulge in a health-destroying substance, but God’s Word promises that the Holy Spirit will rise up in your defence.

Isaiah 59:19 So shall they fear the name of the LORD from the west, and his glory from the rising of the sun. When the enemy shall come in like a flood, the Spirit of the LORD shall lift up a standard against him.

Common sense concludes that “the stronger than he” needs to have a permanent residence, rather than leave after expelling the abductor in a once-off encounter. Even the lions knew that. They remained stationed, protecting the girl for about half a day before the Ethiopian police arrived. In like manner, we are only secure from demonic influence and control if we enjoy the unceasing occupancy of the Holy Spirit in our hearts. The foe will return with a sevenfold vengeance if the strong man is absent.

Lk 11:24-26 When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walketh through dry places, seeking rest; and finding none, he saith, I will return unto my house whence I came out. And when he cometh, he findeth it swept and garnished. Then goeth he, and taketh to him seven other spirits more wicked than himself; and they enter in, and dwell there: and the last state of that man is worse than the first.

Herein lies the secret of every secure Christian – it is the unceasing presence of the Holy Spirit in the heart.

There is, however, a fundamental difference between the indwelling of the Holy Spirit and the safeguarding by lions. The average person would describe the appearance of lions as “luck” or “chance”. I would prefer to call it providential. In any case, the 12-year-old girl did little, or nothing, to enjoy the protection of the lions. Not so with the security that comes from the Christian’s strong man. Christ’s presence by the indwelling of the Holy Spirit does not take place without the believer playing a part. I hear you inquiring, “What must I do for the Holy Spirit to dwell in my heart?” The fact that you can ask a question means you are able to take the first step towards experiencing the presence of the Holy Spirit in your life.

“You must ask” is the initial answer to your question. Christ enters the heart; the Holy Spirit takes possession of the Christian after a deliberate step is taken in asking for the Holy Spirit to take control of our lives.

Luke 11:9-13 And I say unto you, Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you. For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened. If a son shall ask bread of any of you that is a father, will he give him a stone? or if he ask a fish, will he for a fish give him a serpent? Or if he shall ask an egg, will he offer him a scorpion? If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?

Christ will not execute a coup in your life, He will not wrest the reins of your heart from Satan except as you ask Him to do so. As anguishing as it is for Him to watch anyone suffer at the hands of demon possession, He respects our freedom of choice. We are to make our choice whether we want to continue to be under the government of our ruthless foe or experience emancipation at the hands of Jesus.

Joshua 24:15 And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.

Although we are to take our first step in asking, although we need to give Him permission, He has already demonstrated His desire to set us free, even before we knew, or had shown interest, in such freedom. He has long been standing at the door of each heart, knocking, patiently and ceaselessly. In various ways and in a multitude of circumstances, His knock on the door of hearts is heard. On the hospital bed, when the business fails, at the death of the loved one, after a face-to-face encounter with death, when the family ship hits turbulent waters or even during the Covid-19 lockdown. Many will testify that they have come to realize their need for a deliverer after a bitter experience. But it needs not ought to be so. The birds that sing in the early morning, the innocent laughter of children playing outside, the daily provision of food, a scholarship to further one’s education or the proliferation and easy access of the Bible are all meant to open our ears to the voice of our wonderful Saviour seeking permission to enter our hearts.

Revelation 3:20 Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.

After asking for the presence of the Holy Spirit, we need to study God’s Word, His Holy Bible and obey the truths that are taught therein. When the strong man is given permission to enter the house, He immediately expels the abductor and also cleans up the house. You see, Satan’s vice grip is released by the acceptance of truth, for it is the truth that makes you free (John 8:32). It is for this reason that we need to take time to prayerfully study the Bible and by this, the Holy Spirit leads us into emancipating truth.

John 16:13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will show you things to come.

We then hasten to add that God’s Word heard or truth read, without acceptance and belief, will do nothing for us. It is therefore important to exercise faith in the truths revealed in the Bible, it is faith in God’s Word that sets us free. This is demonstrated in one episode when the disciples failed to cast a demon. The reason was a lack of faith.

Matt 17:15-20 Lord, have mercy on my son: for he is a lunatic, and sore vexed: for ofttimes he falleth into the fire, and oft into the water. And I brought him to thy disciples, and they could not cure him. Then Jesus answered and said, O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you? how long shall I suffer you? bring him hither to me. And Jesus rebuked the devil; and he departed out of him: and the child was cured from that very hour. Then came the disciples to Jesus apart, and said, Why could not we cast him out? And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you.

After hearing and believing God’s Word we must obey what the Word says, for disobedience is sin, and sin grieves the Holy Spirit. Persistently clinging to any known sin will, bye and bye, become so repugnant to the strong man that He will depart, leaving ready and easy access for the devil to repossess the soul, with greater fiendish intensity.

Ephesians 4:30 And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.

Hebrews 3:7-13 Wherefore (as the Holy Ghost saith, To day if ye will hear his voice, Harden not your hearts, as in the provocation, in the day of temptation in the wilderness: When your fathers tempted me, proved me, and saw my works forty years. Wherefore I was grieved with that generation, and said, They do alway err in their heart; and they have not known my ways. So I sware in my wrath, They shall not enter into my rest.) Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God. But exhort one another daily, while it is called To day; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.

John 5:14 Afterward Jesus findeth him in the temple, and said unto him, Behold, thou art made whole: sin no more, lest a worse thing come unto thee.

2 Peter 2:19-20 While they promise them liberty, they themselves are the servants of corruption: for of whom a man is overcome, of the same is he brought in bo***ge. For if after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, they are again entangled therein, and overcome, the latter end is worse with them than the beginning.

Luke 11:24-26 When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walketh through dry places, seeking rest; and finding none, he saith, I will return unto my house whence I came out. And when he cometh, he findeth it swept and garnished. Then goeth he, and taketh to him seven other spirits more wicked than himself; and they enter in, and dwell there: and the last state of that man is worse than the first.

The reader can only imagine the relief of the 12-year-old Ethiopian girl after she returned home as a result of the deliverance by lions. It is up to each one of us to picture and also experience the rescue that comes from Jesus, the prevailing lion of the tribe of Judah (Revelation 5:5). Make that choice right now, surrender to Him, begin studying and obeying His truth and eternal freedom will be yours.

Chapter 1: Hostage Rescue (Part 1)

Descriptions of successful rescue missions usually generate feelings of relief over the outcome, sympathy for the victim, and praise and admiration for the hero of the deliverance. Often the audience, viewer or reader is drawn into the hostage scenario and for a moment, they too are held captive as their minds become entwined with the matter at hand.

For instance, in June 2005 The Guardian ran a story of a 12-year-old girl who was kidnapped by seven men in the south-west of Ethiopia and for one week she endured repeated beatings. This would have probably escalated into r**e as it is not rare for young girls to be forced into marriage in such a manner.

At this stage, your mind is held captive as the story unfolds.

The heroes of this story are unlikely and very surprising. They chased away the abductors and protected her for about half the day before the Ethiopian police found her. These heroes then left the girl just as if she was a gift. The natural thing would have been that this girl should have been devoured by her rescuers. She was saved by three lions. It makes sense for the seven men to flee for safety, abandoning their hostage, because the lions were stronger than they.

Such stories as these give hope to those in captivity. There is always the possibility of someone stronger coming to overcome the villains. If it were not so, then you and I would have to abandon ourselves to the dark frothing waves and immeasurable depths of despondency. We would have no hope of freedom from Satan, our ruthless captor who chained up humanity for the sole purpose of killing, stealing and destroying us (John 10:10). He does not work alone: just as the little Ethiopian girl was held hostage by a team of seven men, so does Satan have legions of demons that enter control the emotions, bodies and thoughts of people.

Some are held hostage in the prison-house of sickness:

Luke 13:11-16 And, behold, there was a woman which had a spirit of infirmity eighteen years, and was bowed together, and could in no wise lift up herself. And when Jesus saw her, he called her to him, and said unto her, Woman, thou art loosed from thine infirmity. And he laid his hands on her: and immediately she was made straight, and glorified God. And the ruler of the synagogue answered with indignation, because that Jesus had healed on the sabbath day, and said unto the people, There are six days in which men ought to work: in them therefore come and be healed, and not on the sabbath day. The Lord then answered him, and said, Thou hypocrite, doth not each one of you on the sabbath loose his ox or his ass from the stall, and lead him away to watering? And ought not this woman, being a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan hath bound, lo, these eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the sabbath day?

Others are cast into the dungeon of insanity:

Mark 5:1-15 And they came over unto the other side of the sea, into the country of the Gadarenes. And when he was come out of the ship, immediately there met him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit, Who had his dwelling among the tombs; and no man could bind him, no, not with chains: Because that he had been often bound with fetters and chains, and the chains had been plucked asunder by him, and the fetters broken in pieces: neither could any man tame him. And always, night and day, he was in the mountains, and in the tombs, crying, and cutting himself with stones. But when he saw Jesus afar off, he ran and worshipped him, And cried with a loud voice, and said, What have I to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of the most high God? I adjure thee by God, that thou torment me not. For he said unto him, Come out of the man, thou unclean spirit. And he asked him, What is thy name? And he answered, saying, My name is Legion: for we are many. And he besought him much that he would not send them away out of the country. Now there was there nigh unto the mountains a great herd of swine feeding. And all the devils besought him, saying, Send us into the swine, that we may enter into them. And forthwith Jesus gave them leave. And the unclean spirits went out, and entered into the swine: and the herd ran violently down a steep place into the sea, (they were about two thousand;) and were choked in the sea. And they that fed the swine fled, and told it in the city, and in the country. And they went out to see what it was that was done. And they come to Jesus, and see him that was possessed with the devil, and had the legion, sitting, and clothed, and in his right mind: and they were afraid.

Satan also bestows special abilities, talents and skills to others to the extent that those possessed can generate income from their unique abilities (Acts 16:16). The man in Mark 5 had unbelievable strength. It is no surprise that some celebrities such as Michael Jackson and Beyonce have claimed to be possessed by spirits when writing songs or performing on stage. Whilst bringing misery and poverty to some, as in the case of Mark 5:1-15, Satan gives fame, power or fortune to others; he attempted yet failed to do with Christ.

Matt 4:8-10 Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and showeth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them; And saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me. Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.

The soul that is held hostage by Satan may not have the outwardly pitiful sight of unshaven hair, the possession of extraordinary ability or demonstration of unbecoming behaviour. One man was entrusted by Christ with the high office of preaching as well as being treasurer, yet that man ended up being demon-possessed and was led to betray His Lord in exchange for monetary gain.

Luke 22:3-6 Then entered Satan into Judas surnamed Iscariot, being of the number of the twelve. And he went his way, and communed with the chief priests and captains, how he might betray him unto them. And they were glad, and covenanted to give him money. And he promised, and sought opportunity to betray him unto them in the absence of the multitude.).

Judas is a classic example of men and women who are possessed and held hostage by Satan whilst occupying respectable positions in Christian churches. Avarice is not the only vice exhibited by the demon-possessed soul. Others are publicly immoral, such as the case of Mary Magdalene, who was emancipated by Christ and showed her gratitude by anointing Jesus with expensive perfume, to the disdain of the religious leaders who knew of her sinful lifestyle:

Luke 8:2 And certain women, which had been healed of evil spirits and infirmities, Mary called Magdalene, out of whom went seven devils,

John 12:3 Then took Mary a pound of ointment of spikenard, very costly, and anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped his feet with her hair: and the house was filled with the odour of the ointment.

Luke 7:37-39 And, behold, a woman in the city, which was a sinner, when she knew that Jesus sat at meat in the Pharisee's house, brought an alabaster box of ointment, And stood at his feet behind him weeping, and began to wash his feet with tears, and did wipe them with the hairs of her head, and kissed his feet, and anointed them with the ointment. Now when the Pharisee which had bidden him saw it, he spake within himself, saying, This man, if he were a prophet, would have known who and what manner of woman this is that toucheth him: for she is a sinner.

Many in this post-modern society will frown upon the reality of demon possession because of the stereotypic view that demons always cause the victim to froth in the mouth, alter their voice and shriek eerily. True, this does happen, but frequently those possessed by demons fall within the bracket of being dignified in appearance. Yet, appearance is nothing when every moment of solitude could be a season to indulge in po*******hy; when slight irritations and annoyances reveal an uncontrollable and volatile temper; when the difficult vicissitudes of life sow the seeds of suicidal thoughts and when the offended seethe with a passionate desire for revenge. All this and more may be as a result of demon possession, although the victim may wear a shirt and tie, or put on court shoes.

We may each prayerfully look at our lives, weigh the evidence and assess whether we are controlled by an evil spirit or not. If the answer is yes, if we are like that 12-year-old Ethiopian girl who was beaten and bruised and destined for a more miserable future, then, who will come and rescue us just as the lions delivered her? There is one characteristic that our deliverer should possess. Just as the lions were stronger than them - the abductors, so too must our deliverer be stronger than he - the devil. Jesus made this clear:

Luke 11:21-22 When a strong man armed keepeth his palace, his goods are in peace: But when a stronger than he shall come upon him, and overcome him, he taketh from him all his armour wherein he trusted, and divideth his spoils.
