Nucleic Acid Testing Technology Expands Blood Collection Frontiers, Boosts Zimbabwe’s Blood Stocks

The National Blood Service Zimbabwe (National Blood Service Zimbabwe) says new Nucleic Acid Testing (NAT) technology introduced in 2026 is changing the country’s blood collection system.
The technology is improving blood safety by detecting infections such as HIV, Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C earlier than traditional testing methods. It is also allowing the organisation to collect blood from new public spaces such as shopping malls, in addition to schools and workplaces.
Because of these improvements, Zimbabwe has increased its national blood collection target to nearly 90,000 units, up from about 82,000.
