THE REOPENING of Kamativi Mine has revitalised this once-neglected mining town, creating over 1,200 jobs and pouring millions into local infrastructure and services.

Kamativi Mining Company (KMC), a collaboration between China’s Yahua Group and Zimbabwean partner Defold Mine (Private) Limited, has invested upwards of US$100 million in the initial phase of its lithium project.

After halting operations in 1994 because of a sharp decline in tin prices, the mine is now pivoting towards lithium extraction, with plans to invest a total of US$249 million.

Since resuming operations in September 2022, KMC has generated around 300 direct jobs and more than 1,000 indirect jobs through contractors.

The company has also contributed over US$8 million in taxes to Zimbabwe’s treasury.

A GROUNDBREAKING dry grinding machine, crafted by Zimbabwean engineer Zvikomborero Lazarus Duri, is set to transform cement and gold production by dramatically cutting down on energy use and carbon emissions.

At the 6th Advanced Chemistry World Congress in London, Eng. Duri, along with Dr. Rajesh Arora and Dr. Naveen B.P from Amity University, and Prof Quinton C Kanhukamwe of Harare institute of Technology unveiled the Duri High-Speed Blade Impact Powder Crusher.

This innovative machine is designed to improve the production of geopolymer materials by achieving a higher Blaine fineness—a key measure of particle surface area—more effectively than traditional grinding methods.

THE ZIMBABWEAN government is ramping up efforts to combat gold smuggling, which is estimated to cost the nation over $1.5 billion annually, by urging all gold producers to channel their output through the state-run Fidelity Gold Refinery (FGR).

During the recent Gold Mobilisation Send-Off workshop, Mines and Mining Development Minister Winston Chitando highlighted just how crucial the gold sector is to Zimbabwe’s economy.

He pointed out that gold plays a vital role in backing the country’s currency, the Zimbabwe Gold (ZiG), and that processing all gold through FGR is essential for maintaining economic stability.
