Zimbabwe, Angola deepen higher education ties through university partnership drive
A Zimbabwean higher and tertiary delegation attending the Luanda International Fair (FILDA) led by Acting Permanent Secretary for Higher and Tertiary Education Mrs Memory Mukondomi on Wednesday visited the University of Luanda to explore opportunities for academic collaboration and gain insights into the institution's programmes.
The delegation was accompanied by officials from the Zimbabwean Embassy in Angola, Chief Director for Economic Cooperation, International Trade and Diaspora in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Trade Mrs Rudo Faranisi, representatives from higher and tertiary education institutions, Mrs Gamuchirai Kapembeza Acting Director-Economics Markets and Trade, Ministry of Agriculture, Mechanisation and Water Resources Development, Mrs Netsai Fortune Moyo, Senior Economist, Economics Markets and Trade, Ministry of Agriculture, Mechanisation and Water Resources Development and Mr Jonathan Gumbo, Economist, Ministry of Industry and Commerce.
Addressing university officials, Mrs Mukondomi said the delegation was in Angola to promote Zimbabwe's "Study in Zimbabwe" campaign and showcase the country's Heritage-Based Education 5.0 model, which integrates teaching, research, community service, innovation and industrialisation to address national development challenges.
She said the framework could be of interest to Angola as it seeks to harness its natural and human resources to produce graduates equipped to create solutions and drive economic development.
Mrs Mukondomi said Zimbabwe was ready to share its experience while expanding academic cooperation through joint research, staff and student exchanges, technology transfer, language and cultural programmes, and the harmonisation of academic standards. She said the initiatives would help implement commitments made under the Memorandum of Understanding signed during the Zimbabwe-Angola Joint Permanent Commission on Cooperation in May 2024.
She added that relations between Zimbabwe and Angola, forged during the liberation struggle, were entering a new phase centred on education, innovation and skills development.
Director of Higher Education Programmes Dr. Dennis Murekachiro presented the key pillars of the Heritage-Based Education 5.0 philosophy, explaining how the model aligns with Zimbabwe's Vision 2030 and national development priorities. Representatives from both institutions also outlined areas of mutual interest for future collaboration.
University of Luanda Vice-Chancellor Prof Alfredo Gabriel Buza said the institution plans to send a delegation to Zimbabwe in September to strengthen partnerships with Zimbabwean universities.
"We want to build stronger relationships, sign more partnerships with institutions in Zimbabwe, break language barriers between our institutions and ensure that staff and students can learn from each other," Prof Buza said.
He added that both countries should prioritise initiatives that expand opportunities for young people and improve academic mobility.
Zimbabwe and Angola are expected to convene another session of the Joint Permanent Commission on Cooperation in Harare later this year to consider additional areas of bilateral cooperation.
